Random Wednesday Morning Thoughts

  • The big news this morning is that former Patriot and convicted killer Aaron Hernandez, 27, hanged himself in his jail cell. That guy was a straight up gangsta. (Odd legal note: He was serving a life sentence but the case was on appeal. In Texas, if a defendant dies during an appeal, the appeal is simply dismissed. In Massachusetts, however, they actually vacate the conviction. So Aaron Hernandez will technically not be a convicted murderer once the court issues the order.)
  • ESPN had an interesting article on the Raiders move to Las Vegas (and how Jerry Jones intervened to get the deal done.) But in the article, there was a paragraph about how Vegas is going downhill. It's been about five years since I was there, and I didn't get that feeling. Is it true?
  • And Another (Ohio):
  • This is a heck of a photo from I-35 moments after the West, Texas explosion four years ago. I had never seen it before. (And I continue to believe the ATF claiming the explosion was the result of arson but not explaining how exactly it was arson or having any idea who was behind it is the biggest B.S. "justify my government job because we are working so hard" report we've had in the last decade.)
  • At Bridgeport elementary, we started doing square dancing in the fifth grade during P.E. That is, until some parents complained that dancing was against their religious beliefs. We stopped doing it immediately.
  • Baylor has hired its first female president. Question: Has any major Texas university, or Big 12 school for that matter, ever had a female president?
  • On the day the president’s daughter Ivanka Trump and her dad met Chinese leader Xi Jinping at Mar-a-Lago, China granted preliminary approval for three new trademarks for one of Ivanka's companies selling jewelry, bags and spa service. The first family will get filthy rich exploiting the President's position.
  • All the idiotic things Infowars founder Alex Jones has said over the years is about to cost him custody of his children in a trial going on in Austin.
  • Pete Sessions will get an opponent in next year's election who is a former NFL player and current civil rights lawyer (assuming he wins the Democratic primary.) Note: Hillary beat Trump in Sessions' district last year.
  • Last night in "Tucker Carlson Dumb Face". Buddy, close your mouth:
  • If key members of Congress condition Tax Reform on Trump releasing his tax returns, there will be no Tax Reform. He won't do it.
  • Reports are surfacing the Fox News is about to cut ties with Bill O'Reilly. Told ya.

So more with the Trump derangement syndrome....

Guess that there is nothing wrong with all of the money that the Clintons have made from speaking fees and other questionable payments simply because he had been President and she was Secretary of State ad was running for President?

Also, how does a "Community Organizer" afford all of the nice houses and travel? Now, he is just returning from a yacht trip in Tahiti with Tom Hanks, Oprah Winfrey and Bruce Springsteen. I am sure that he hasn't made a penny off of being President.

Vegas is changing some, but because the casinos are so important, there may be some downhill slide for them. I've been twice this year, and the place was busy. But I haven't gambled in Vegas in 15 years. I go for the food, and to swing through while on the way to other places, like parks in Utah or California. There seems to be lots of younger people gambling every time I go, but I wouldn't know how it compares to past years. For every hipster millennial, there are a dozen millennial rednecks who have no problem with gambling.

Baylor hiring a woman right now is pure cynicism. It's like Republicans running Ben Carson and claiming they're friendly to minorities. It's not even thinly veiled BS, it's pure BS. Only the idiots on the board who think they can hide the assaults by not having a written report from PH despite all of the pending lawsuits with discovery and motions firing off left and right would also think "hey, let's hire a woman, and nobody will think we condone rape".

The Trumps are the only family that you have ever noticed doing well economically when a family member is president? Where have you been, Barry? Ironically, the Trump family has done fine without his sacrifice of serving as president and putting up with asinine comments.

NFL recruiting total gangstas (and incidentally, college football programs recruiting them to their campuses so they can rape and kill people)? Dog bites man! :-)

I had a probate case years back wherein the decedent had been killed by her husband, who was also her beneficiary for purposes of her retirement fund and under intestacy laws. We had to wait until a final conviction before we could skip the husband as an heir.

I wonder how Massachusetts handles that, since they apparently vacate the conviction altogether. If Texas did that, then the killer's heirs would take the victim's estate (so long as 90 days had passed since the victim's death).

Actually, in Texas, the death of an appealing defendant means that the appeal will be "permanently abated." TRAP 7.1(a)(2). I'm not sure how that would affect a situation like the one you mention (as it really isn't the same as a "dismissal" -- though it's treated like that for statistical purposes).

9:09 - Crushed? Really? The guy took 48% of the vote out of a field of, what was it, 18 candidates - in a solidly red district? I would expect, however, that the Republican will win in the run-off given that the next four vote-getters were R's and the votes will consolidate behind Handel. Unfortunately for Ossoff none of the other Democrats in the field even got 1% of the vote ... so there's not much to consolidate behind him ... and that 48% was probably about his best showing.

D/Ossoff - 48%
R/Handel - 20%
R/Gray - 11%
R/Moody - 9%
R/Hill - 9%
(all rounded to the nearest whole number)

Sorry 9:09. A vote of 48.3% for Ossoff in a thoroughly Republican district ain't getting crushed by any factual measure. Just the opposite (or maybe alternative fact?). Ossoff may not win the run-off because the outside money will flood in, but residents registered their disgust with Trump and his ilk in Tuesday's vote.

That photo of West has been manipulated. That's not the direction the site was if a person was standing in front of the Czech stop and looking over the Sonic roof. And the explosion was too incredible for the people in the photo to be so casual. There is a fake involved.

I'm pretty sure that if you are on a yacht trip with Springsteen, Tom Hanks, and Oprah, you don't really worry about the costs. I believe they have it covered. If you don't see the difference between the two scenarios, you have on blinders. I'm not shocked.

Mark Cuban Gooding Jr. saying he wasn't a lefty was as about as funny as Maxine Waters saying she had not called for Trump to be impeached. I seem to remember him supporting Hitlary for president.

UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS AT AUSTIN:

Lorene Lane Rogers
Ph.D., D.Sc., F.A.I.C.
21st President
1974-1975 (ad interim)
1975-1979

In 1962, a member of UT’s Chemistry Department told Lorene Rogers, “We’ve never had a woman in our department, and we never will.” Undaunted, Rogers, who possessed a doctorate in biochemistry, became a professor of nutrition in the Department of Home Economics. She was a vice president at the university when she was tapped to become interim president in 1974 after the firing of Stephen Spurr. Although the her title as vice president didn’t specify the duties, she handled many of the sensitive issues that faced universities at that time, including in particular those involving affirmative action programs.

Rogers is believed to be the first woman to lead a public university in the United States. Contending that they were denied a say in picking the new president, faculty members and students held protest rallies to force Rogers to resign. Rogers presided over the aftermath of a divisive battle between Regent Frank Erwin and Dean John Silber of the College of Arts and Sciences. She created the College of Liberal Arts, bringing together General and Comparative Studies, Social and Behavioral Sciences, and Humanities. The six years of Rogers’ presidency were highly eventful and saw the faculty gain two Nobel laureates, the campus acquiring the Gutenberg Bible, and Earl Campbell winning the Heisman Trophy.

1) Do you consider Texas Woman's University a major university?

2) I thought that damn NY Yankee was already filthy rich. Isn't that how he bought the election?

1018 - So a Democrat gets more votes because of "disgust with Trump and his ilk," but when the Republican gets more votes it's because "outside money will flood in." Interesting paradigm you've created for yourself.

So Barry, can you answer questions about the China deals? We the patent applications fast-tracked? Was special consideration given that can be established?
These are not the first patent applications Ivanka has submitted in China, or the first she has been given there. The Chinese will give them because it brings manufacturing jobs in and feeds their desire for consumer goods.
Maybe just maybe the announcement of the approvals was timed to coincide with the state visit as an icebreaker.

I care as much about Trump's tax returns as I did Obama's college transcripts! Anyone with half a brain know they are both lying to us. Trump isn't as rich as he claims, Obama was not a good student and lied about his status to get accepted. Hillary also told us a mountain of lies over the years. It's politics people, get over it. Time to suck it up when your horse loses the race and keep your mouths shut.

11:00 is right on. The differences between Trump profiting off of the presidency (and anyone else) is like night and day (excuse the metaphor). The Trump family has business interests all over the world and will increase profits by meeting and negotiating with leaders of of foreign nations. Night and day.

Milennials may not love casino games, but they love the nightclub/dayclub scene, which is taking up more and more square footage of the Strip megaresorts.

The casinos charging for parking is not evidence of them hurting. It's evidence that they can get away with it.
