Random Monday Morning Thoughts




That was quite the turnout, including the President, for the victims of the West, Texas explosion. The service was held at Baylor's basketball facility. 

  • It was a false alarm in Mansfield yesterday afternoon, but if you want to see the sheer panic via cellphone video of kids and parents running when they thought there was an active shooter in their midst, here ya go. You can feel the terror. 

  • Fort Worth murder at a high tone apartment complex in the Fort Worth Cultural District: "A resident who was being evicted is accused of killing Carlos Aybar, a maintenance worker at" or near the leasing office.


  • In Jasper, Texas on Saturday night.

  • But let's worry about drag shows instead, right? 

  • The embattled Oklahoma Sheriff who was already caught talking about killing journalists and blacks has now has been recorded saying he wants to "whoop the ass" of the District Attorney.  Now this gets my attention. Let's settle it in the octagon on pay-per-view.


  • We obviously have some Deviltry going on in Madison County (down near the Aggies in College Station.)

  • I'm kind of surprised the paper ran this picture with the story.

     

  • In case you missed it late Friday, the abortion drug will stay legal while the battle continues for now in the 5th Circuit. Oral arguments are already scheduled for May 17th. 

  • Good. I thought that sentence, and even the conviction, was too harsh for an accident. 


  • Gateway Megachurch based in Southlake endorsed school board candidates again this weekend with a slideshow presentation while never saying the word "endorse" to avoid a tax problem. All of the candidates recommended have been funded by Patriot Mobile -- the far right wing company trying to take over local school boards. (The church made recommendations for Northwest ISD, too.) Video.

  • That's a big lead but not insurmountable because it's still early. Oh, and the fact that Trump is in the lead is mind-blowing. Not just for philosophical reasons but for practical ones. No one else will inspire millions to crawl over broken glass just to vote against him in the general election. 
     


  • Random sports flashback: Maybe the worst call in college football occurred in 1988 against North Texas when they played UT in Austin. Video. I was in the stands.  And the game winner in the exact same location on the field was just as bad. Video. There was no review by replay at that time.

Random Friday Morning Thoughts




By the end of the week 10 years ago, one of the Boston bombers was dead and the other captured. As they media instigated their backgrounds, one of them was found to have been just a regular high school wrestler. 

  • I told you time and time again this prosecution was stupid and would never go anywhere. The prosecutors never had any idea what they were doing.

  • I get a sense that there is a growing war brewing in Decatur over the upcoming school bond election. 
  • Elon Musk had a fabulous day yesterday: (1) His rocket blew up, but he spun it as a 'rapid unscheduled disassembly', (2) Twitter got rid of blue check marks which now means you don't know who is real, and (3) Tesla released its earnings and the stock plummeted 10%.



  • I alerted you to this bill when it was filed, but I didn't think it would get any traction. Well, the crazy Texas Senate just passed it. I don't think the House will be that dumb, but they just might be. 

  • This story is so glorious. 

  • Nothing says "free and fair" elections more than a bunch of guys in matching uniforms with guns watching over you. 

  • No way! A Trump Insurrectionist is also the kind of guy who would open fire on Texas deputies.

     
  • Preach on. Cut to its core, a fine only punishes those who cannot afford it.

  • I still hate that Dominion let Fox News off the hook by letting them just write a check, albeit for a staggering amount, yet I still get satisfaction by all the names with "pending" beside them.

  • Nothing legally significant about it, but an "open plea" before the judge in Wise County which resulted in a 40 year sentence last year was affirmed yesterday by the Fort Worth Court of Appeals. 
  • Time which has passed since the Wise County Sheriff's Office, despite having a full male DNA profile, has failed to solve the murder of Lauren Whitener in her home at Lake Bridgeport: 3 years, 290 days.

Random Thursday Morning Thoughts




Man, the Decatur Livestock Market really leaned into it in their cattle prices report back in the day. 

  • Wise County Sheriff's Officer jail/court database is down again.

  • A small plane owned by Veruca Salt LLC, crashed about 6:30 p.m. yesterday evening along U.S. 380 near the Bridgeport airport. The pilot, 62, was airlifted to JPS. The passenger, 58, was transported by ambulance. Neither person is local.  And the best I can tell, neither are associated with the alt-rock band Veruca Salt. 



  • Yesterday's "10 Years Ago" feature at the top had a 2013 story about a Bridgeport substitute teacher beaning a kid in the head with a ball. A faithful reader found the video on CNN's website. 

  • These crime-creation police stings sure have been making a comeback.  And although I like Lake Worth's police chief, these police traps just clog the courts and simply feel wrong.  And this one was called "Operation April Fools." <groan>

  • This tweet by conservative Republican Texas Rep. Jeff Leach got him sued for defamation by a MAGA disciple. That's clearly free speech by Leach and another example of MAGA Republicans strong-arm tactics.
       


    • And he got served with the lawsuit by a process server who registered to testify on a random bill and then got up and served Leach who was serving as the chairman of the committee. Video.

  • Quite the truck fire on 114 going into Dallas yesterday.
     

  • One down. Three more to go. The Sheriff in Oklahoma needs to go next because of this mess.

  • The city of Denton now has someone with a needle waiting for you at the jail. 

  • A proposed book banning statute made it out of the Texas House yesterday. Banning "sexually explicit" books from "school libraries" sounds great but the problem is that it has such a vague definition that, depending on who is in charge at the local school, it will be a free-for-all on what will be banned. Just call it "sexually explicit" and put it on the stack it on the stack to be burned? 


    • Flashback: Germany banning books found "inappropriate" by the government. You scoff, but this is how it starts.

  • Holy cow, this is real. 


  • Random in-party fighting entertainment. Drinks appear to have been flowing. Video. 

  • I just reviewed the bullet points above. A (government) prostitution sting, a Texas secession lawsuit, (government) officials in Oklahoma behind closed doors speaking of killing blacks and reporters, blood being taken at a (government) police station, a (government) prosecutor having a policy of treating Hispanics more harshly, and book banning (by government). Have I mentioned we are headed to a dark place?

  • Remember all the Gov. Abbott led press conferences after Uvalde? The end result was that Uvalde parents had to wait until the middle of the night to testify for a bill that would raise the age to purchase and AR-15 from 18 to 21. A bill which will never pass in Austin . . .
