Super Bowl
I think something called the Super Bowl is being played tomorrow.
The Pittsburgh Steeler quarterback is some guy named Ben Roethlisberger.
I want to hang out with him.
Tiger and Me
Broken Flowers
It's about a 50 something year old guy who gets an anonymous letter from an old girlfriend that tells him he has an 18 year old son. And, surprise, he has just hit the road to look for his father. Murray then goes on an odyssey to visit every possible old girlfriend to find out which old girlfriend is the mother. Confusing, but he just shows up on their doorsteps. Pretty good stuff.

The Sheriff's Office Is Bent Out Of Shape Over This Guy
From a Press Release (And it made the news on WBAP):

Burning Down The House
"BEWLEY GIVEN PROBATION IN ARSON — A Wise County jury yesterday morning sentenced Taz Thomas Bewley, 38, to 10 years of probation a day after he pleaded guilty to arson." - From the Update
I watched a little bit of the trial and, thank God, the jury gave the guy probation. He is severely physically scarred from setting himself on fire, had no criminal history, and clearly did not intend to harm anyone. (He pretty much set himself and his car on fire - a fire which moved over to a trailer home after about 15 minutes). It was more of a suicide attempt than anything else.

One More Free Speech Rant
The Washington Post ran this cartoon recently. Offensive to the pro-war crowd? Probably. But what is absolutely incredible is that the Pentagon sent this letter (pdf format) to the newspaper yesterday chastising them for running it.
Citizens can complain all they want to. America embraces the discourse.
But the government should never try to stifle protected free speech. I don't think the Bush Administration understands that at all.
Stolen From Another Blog, I Wish I Had Thought Of It
As many of you know, war protestor Cindy Sheehan was arrested in your national capitol building last night because she wore a T-Shirt that read, "2,245 Dead — How Many More??". For that, she was arrested by your capitol police.
Here's the stolen part: Did you know that in 1971, the Supreme Court said it was unconstitutional to arrest a man who wore a "F--- the Draft" T-shirt into the courthouse? (Cohen v. California, you can look it up.) So now Alito's on the court for 45 minutes and your civil liberties are already going down the toilet. You were warned.

Messenger Forum
The Messenger has opened up a public forum on its web site with the first question posed being one of "Should the DHS campus be closed for lunch."
So far it looks like they aren't censoring the posts (I can't imagine that being true for too long).
And so far it has deteriorated into name calling (there's even one commentor calling another one "gay").
And I have yet to see one hot girl posted.

More State of The Union Speech Excerpts
If the following is true, thats-a-good. It probably has nothing to do with government, but good nonetheless:
"In recent years, America has become a more hopeful Nation. Violent crime rates have fallen to their lowest levels since the 1970s. Welfare cases have dropped by more than half over the past decade. Drug use among youth is down 19 percent since 2001. There are fewer abortions in America than at any point in the last three decades, and the number of children born to teenage mothers has been falling for a dozen years in a row."
Incredible
Speaking of the State of the Union, our beloved President, who has in the past admitted there is no connection between Iraq and 9/11 begins his speech tonight with this:
"Abroad, our Nation is committed to an historic, long-term goal – we seek the end of tyranny in our world. Some dismiss that goal as misguided idealism. In reality, the future security of America depends on it. On September 11th, 2001, we found that problems originating in a failed and oppressive state seven thousand miles away could bring murder and destruction to our country. Dictatorships shelter terrorists, feed resentment and radicalism, and seek weapons of mass destruction. Democracies replace resentment with hope, respect the rights of their citizens and their neighbors, and join the fight against terror. Every step toward freedom in the world makes our country safer, and so we will act boldly in freedom’s cause. "
Absolutely incredible. I don't know how he gets away with it.

This is my favorite tidbit about the old Decatur Baptist College: "The first [football] game that the Decatur Baptist College team played was with Bowie High School. The victor of the game was the Bowie High School with a score of seventy-six to nothing. The Decatur Team was a stout team."
