Random Tuesday Morning Thoughts




I'm not sure how I got mentioned in this Letter to the Editor ten years ago, but it's sobering to realize he's still in a federal prison. 

  • An NFL player is fighting for his life this morning after a hit on the field caused his heart to stop.

    • He just fell over backwards after the collision after initially getting to his feet. 

    • I don't recall a game ever being suspended due to an injury.  And the NFL is denying that it initially issued an edict to give the teams "five minutes to stretch" and then to resume play. In all fairness, on the broadcast Joe Buck did say there would be a five minute delay, but he didn't say anything about that coming from the NFL office. This is what the NFL issued after about an hour last night:


    • We probably should all be ashamed that we watch and support football. From CTE to destroyed and crippled knees to a player on the verge of dying. They are simply now too big and too fast. I saw someone posted this last night and it fits perfectly:

    • I used to harp on this all the time. This is from Random Thoughts on July 29, 2014:

    • But, admittedly, it has happened before. 

    • This is your reminder that the owners have a arbitrary and self-imposed "salary cap" in place. Hamlin was drafted in the sixth round in last years draft, given the option of playing for only the Bills, and was offered a basically non-negotiated contract that pays him $825,000 this year. 
    • For Troy Aikman to make $18 million a year to speak on TV, he basically sat moot last night as all of this was going down. Joe Buck, on the other hand, was great.  (Here is the first 4:00 minutes from the broadcast, post-injury, with the commercials edited out.) 
  • Man, Clay County, and especially its Sheriff, is a mess.  "Clay County Sheriff Jeff Lyde was arrested on three new charges of official oppression at about 7 p.m. Monday, according to online information from the Clay County Jail. Lyde was indicted on the new charges, and Texas Rangers had been seeking to arrest him " As of last night, the indictments were still "sealed" so we don't know what the specific allegations are. 

  • Sounds like what I speculated about might be true. 

  • The Republicans are a mess as they try to elect a House Speaker.  Rep. Kevin McCarthy has wanted the job for years, but he doesn't have enough votes -- a vote which happens today. If he doesn't get it on the first ballot, they keep voting. I keep seeing that "multiple votes hasn't happened in over 100 years."

    • Four defecting Republicans will sink him. Five are firm no's, and even the following nine are in the "unlikely" camp: 

  • Fun fact from over in Denton. 

  • TCU is a 13.5 underdog to Georgia. That seems about right, but there's no way I'd bet against them.

Random Monday Morning Thoughts





Nothing changed, and I'd still take Danny White over Romo. And I found the video on YouTube of the interception that I was referencing. Man, it was horrible. It was against the Redskins and RG3 in the last game of the year. 

  • News this morning. Apparently he likes driving heavy machinery. He's been in a ton of things, but I really liked him American Hustle.

  • We had an arrest ate last week in the Idaho murder mystery. The probable cause affidavit, which will detail what evidence they have against him, will be released once he gets extradited back to Idaho which should be this week.  I'm very interested in what it says especially since police have hinted that DNA is involved.  Genetic genealogy involved?

    • Funny.

    • I got a late Christmas gift when I looked up the other night and saw Nancy Grace covering the case on Fox News. She told us that it looked like the accused was "born with a silver spoon" based upon "all the trees" and land surrounding his house from the aerial shots. 

  • Good grief. They spent a week in jail. 


  • When the Catholics display a body, they really display a body.

  • All the tabloids are running with the headline of "sucked into plane",  and it may very well have happened that way, but I haven't seen any credible new source describe it that way. The most they will says is that it was an "industrial-like accident".  The FAA should release a preliminary statement today. 

  • Tim O'Hare has already been sworn in as Tarrant County Judge. This will be a disaster. And he made sure that he took the oath on an extra large Bible which is simply foreshadowing. And he wanted to send a  message that he is extra Christian.

  • Interesting side note:  "The property was purchased by the Three Affiliated Tribes of the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation based in central North Dakota."  There's a fairly new documentary about the shooting on Paramount+ called 11 minutes with a bunch of bodycam and cellphone video from that night. It looks intense. 

  • I normally wouldn't care about a racetrack in Anna, but the story in the Morning News referenced Decatur. 


  • Local radio: Long-time board op for The Ticket for the Musers and the Norm Hitzges show, formerly known as Jeremy Moran and who recently retired from the station, announced on Twitter last night that he is in Transition. She even added a picture.  The comments posted have been nothing but positive.
  • Most of the New Year's Eve shows on TV are gawd-awful, but there was one very cool performance by David Byrne and Miley Cyrus covering David Bowie's "Let's Dance."  Byrne looked a bit uncomfortable at first, but soon got into it. His voice is still there. Video.
  • Just Ginni Thomas admitting she was talking with her Supreme Court Justice husband about overthrowing the election while she was texting the Chief of Staff of the defeated president. And Clarence Thomas didn't recuse himself when the cases came before the Supreme Court -- and instead dissented with an opinion in one of them.  





  • Link to the disturbing video of UT coach Steve Sarkisian absolutely losing his mind because a guy, who was in charge of telling them when they can run onto the field, touched him. That man's not right. 

  • I cannot believe TCU is going to play for the National Championship, but that was a wildly entertaining game.  A lot of people ridiculously thought TCU was was going to be a blow-out after Michigan's first play of the game was a 53 yard run to the TCU 22 yard line.  To me, that brought back memories of the first play of the previously most famous bowl game the Frogs were in, the 2011 Rose Bowl against Wisconsin (which they also won.) That first play:

Random Friday Morning Thoughts




This was in the final 2012 issue of the Messenger which was its "Year in Review" edition. I'm not sure I've mentioned that wild case of a lady's body being found in his garage rolled up in a carpet in Paradise.

  • This is a very weird story. We don't know what happened to the girl, if anything. There's no indication she told police what happened (although she was taken to the hospital for "evaluation".) And then there's this kicker: "Two other women, who are believed to be unrelated to the man, were also inside the restroom. Police said neither witnessed an assault, fighting or signs of a struggle while inside the restroom."

  • A breaking news headline. There's absolutely no details in the story, but adding that it happened in the "cultural district" is a nice ironic angle. The lone fact is that it happened "at the intersection of Bledsoe Street and Currie Drive." 

  • There's no way to explain this in a bullet point. Look it all up. (And although the arrest is true, the pizza box angle is probably false.) 

    • Not a bad explanation attempt, though:

  • A bill has been introduced in the Texas legislature to allow Justices of the Peace to authorize the taking of blood from you without your consent. This one is authorized by Jacksboro's David Spiller. David is a friend of mine, but that bill is a dumb idea. It's tried every session, but inevitably fails. 

  • It's really amazing that an outdated software system is behind the Southwest Airline issue. There's one thing this country is full of is people who can competently design and manage databases and logistical systems. And expense is not a big problem.

  • Remember this guy, Doc Gallagher? . . .
     

    • Well, he appealed his conviction and sentence, but his court-appointed lawyer concluded there wasn't a valid ground for the appeal. The Fort Worth Court of Appeals affirmed his conviction yesterday as a result. 

  • Baby Jesus will get his vengeance. The two arrested were of the ages of 33 and 39.  

  • I hadn't checked on Fox4Terry's Twitter account in a while. He's still out there pounding the late night streets.

  • I have no idea what is going to happen tomorrow in TCU v. Michigan, but I'm extremely interested. TCU could get blown out, or they could win it outright. As a sports expert, I'm clueless.

  • But here's a hot sports opinion: Texas' Xavier Worthy ain't that great. That horrendous drop in the third quarter last night (video) isn't anything new. 

  • Time which has passed since the Wise County Sheriff's Office, despite having a full male DNA profile, has failed to solve the murder of Lauren Whitener in her home at Lake Bridgeport: 3 years, 178 days.
