Random Monday Morning Thoughts




Olympian Gabby Douglass stopped by the Mavericks. 

  • President Biden made a surprise visit to Ukraine this morning.  Can you imagine the logistics in pulling that off? But it seems that Russia was advised of the trip shortly before it occurred.  Moments ago, he took off to head to Poland. Edit: He might be on a train there. Not sure. 

  • A 16" water main broke this morning on I-30 heading out of Fort Worth which caused the entire eastbound lanes to be shutdown. 

  • The grift and fraud will ultimately be much greater than the actual damage caused. At least six potential class actions have been filed so far.  

  • Austin got a lot of attention yesterday after a crowd took over an intersection with some insane driving stunts (video) and then the crowd backed up a single cop car that had shown up (video).


  • President Carter enters hospice care at home. There has probably never been a better overall good person to serve as president. 

    • Regarding how much the country has changed, look at how his electoral map looked for the 1976 election. The Democratic Carter won Texas, Florida and the South. Gerald Ford won California and the west coast.  

  • Violence is so common you probably didn't even hear about the event below which happened Friday. The killings occurred in three different locations.  




  • Sheesh. I just saw this one that happened on Saturday a little closer to home: 

  • A decorative helicopter fell at a water park inside a New Jersey mall, hurting four. And that's one big mall waterpark. 



  • A political watchdog issues a warning that what happened to Southlake and Colleyville ISDs could be happening in Northwest. Schatzline is a state rep and unabashed Christian Nationalist. 

  • Not that I understand it, but the price of natural gas has plummeted in the last few months. 

  • Something doesn't sound right.
  • This story, from the Wichita Falls paper, makes no sense.  I understand having a great computer system which notifies a potential juror member that their service isn't needed and that they don't have to appear, but this article talks about eliminating the need for a large area of gathering to first ensure that all the potential jurors have the basic qualifications to serve (county resident, age, etc.)

  • It's President's Day but, as always, I'm the HWMISB™.

Random Friday Morning Thoughts




Just a photo of a Wise County contingent visiting the legislature. A lot has changed in 10 years.

  • It's beginning to look like the U.S. used a $400,000 missile to take down a $100 hobby balloon over Lake Huron.  I've seen both Fox News and MSNBC mention this story. 

  • An expected step in the process has occurred. There was a deadline to indict him by the end of the month or there would have been bond implications.  (If you are wondering why they aren't showing up in the Wise County online records at this moment, it normally takes until the next morning after the grand jury meets before the update occurs.)

  • There's not many details other than "police say Richard Laird had been communicating with the girl just before she disappeared from her home on Sunday."

    • The girl was found, and this was the headline three days ago:

  • A wild chase early yesterday morning in Lake Worth left a bunch of folks injured. The ages were three men (28, 18 and 16) and one teenage girl (13) who is in the worst shape.  They allegedly had a pretty good stash of cocaine and heroine in the car.  I saw the dashcam footage on Fox 4 last night, but I can't find it online. 

  • Yesterday an appeals court rebuffed Kari Lake's efforts to steal the Arizona election like a fascist, so she immediately tried to make money off of it. What a nutcase. What a grifter. 

  • Oh, my (Out of Wisconsin.)

  • Oh, my again. (Out of D.C.)

  • Good for him.  There once was a time when a vice-presidential candidate had to withdraw from the ticket simply because he had been treated for depression years earlier. 

  • Greg Abbott gave his State of the State speech last night behind closed doors at some corporation's headquarters in San Antonio where the press wasn't invited and cell phones were banned. I actually found it on some spare channel and got to see them break down the stage afterwards. Very wheels off. 


  • "According to the lawsuit, Diggs was leasing a home in the 3400 block of Hollow Pine Drive in Frisco with a one-year lease term and a monthly payment of $5,500."  Here's the neighborhood on Streetview. It's nice, but I don't think that's $5,500 a month. Maybe I'm wrong. 

  • A man on Texas Death Row, scheduled to executed in September, died yesterday. That's just weird to type.
  • Time which has passed since the Wise County Sheriff's Office, despite having a full male DNA profile, has failed to solve the murder of Lauren Whitener in her home at Lake Bridgeport: 3 years, 227 days.

Random Thursday Morning Thoughts




The merger of American and United was approved by both boards. American was in a bad way having filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy. 

  • And another.  Here is the video of people running for their lives as gunshots rang out last night.

  • Yesterday, a man rushed the defendant in the courtroom before the sentencing in a Buffalo mass shooting case, and you've probably seen the video. At first I thought he knew there was no way he could get to the shooter, but he is so big that he might have actually pulled it off if he had lowered his shoulder and gave it the good ol' college try. But I'm not sure his heart was really into it.

  • This story came out over the weekend, but I just saw it, and it has some some crazy footage. Below is a still shot of a video of an anti-tank missile traveling horizontal to the ground towards a bunch of aid workers in Ukraine, including an American who was a former marine. The New York Times even has the video which is included in the story. (I was able to "gift" the link since it is normally behind a paywall.)

  • The chances of military aircraft being involved in any crash on U.S. soil is very high. We had a Blackhawk helicopter go down yesterday in Alabama, killing two. 

  • I ranted about Texas Scorecard yesterday trying to demonize teachers, and now they have new ammunition. 


  • If he was flying in underage girlfriends, he is going to get away with it. 

  • I saw this headline, but it really was somewhat old news. The missed bullet and the autopsy error were discovered many months ago and led to a complete overhaul of the ME's office. This is now the trial that the DA has decided to go forward with. This guy now has to take it in the shorts over someone else's mistake. 

  • For a second there I thought this was about the rapper 50 Cent. 

     
  • Rest in Peace to the bombshell of my youth.

  • This was amazing. The Rangers posted the tweet below yesterday morning to promote their off-season signing of Jacob deGrom, who they will pay $185,000,000 over five years.  In less than an hour, the team announced that muscle tightness prevented him from throwing on the first day of spring training. 

  • Yes, I'm having a talk with my Weather Team.  I don't want to hear any mumbo jumbo about the "the cap." 
  • The domestic violence charges against the former UT basketball coach were dismissed yesterday and probably properly so. There was probably no way the DA could win it.  

    • But UT made it clear in its dismissal letter that it such a result was not going to change anything. 

  • Only one minute of this album is available to listen to, but I want it.
