Burning Down The House

"BEWLEY GIVEN PROBATION IN ARSON — A Wise County jury yesterday morning sentenced Taz Thomas Bewley, 38, to 10 years of probation a day after he pleaded guilty to arson." - From the Update I watched a little bit of the trial and, thank God, the jury gave the guy probation. He is severely physically scarred from setting himself on fire, had no criminal history, and clearly did not intend to harm anyone. (He pretty much set himself and his car on fire - a fire which moved over to a trailer home after about 15 minutes). It was more of a suicide attempt than anything else.

I'm Beaten Down . . .

. . . by stories of Punxsutawney Phil this morning. And I always feel sorry for that overgrown rat.

I Loves Me Some Christina Aguilera

Caught . . .

. . .Cyndi Lauper on VH Classic tonight with a replay of a concert from last year. The lead singer from Train played a big part of it. I still think "Time After Time" is a great song. (Although that goes against my basic tenant of never listening to Classic Rock).

Jordan?

I've never heard of this girl, but she is everywhere on the Internet. And she is soooo smart that she can even write a book. (But that is one weird skirt).

One More Free Speech Rant

The Washington Post ran this cartoon recently. Offensive to the pro-war crowd? Probably. But what is absolutely incredible is that the Pentagon sent this letter (pdf format) to the newspaper yesterday chastising them for running it. Citizens can complain all they want to. America embraces the discourse. But the government should never try to stifle protected free speech. I don't think the Bush Administration understands that at all.

Stolen From Another Blog, I Wish I Had Thought Of It

As many of you know, war protestor Cindy Sheehan was arrested in your national capitol building last night because she wore a T-Shirt that read, "2,245 Dead — How Many More??". For that, she was arrested by your capitol police. Here's the stolen part: Did you know that in 1971, the Supreme Court said it was unconstitutional to arrest a man who wore a "F--- the Draft" T-shirt into the courthouse? (Cohen v. California, you can look it up.) So now Alito's on the court for 45 minutes and your civil liberties are already going down the toilet. You were warned.

WOW

I do not remember this ever happening in Tarrant County. A "not guity" verdict in a capital murder case (although the State was not seeking the death penalty). And it's a high profile one, too, since it involved the death of a child in Haltom City.

So Wrong. So Confusing.

Pic From The State of The Union Last Night

I wonder what the dog was thinking? "I wonder what Barney and Miss Beazley are doing later?" "These people creep me out." "I think I'm better looking than Hillary." "I feel like I'm being used."

Uni-Sex Bathroom

There is a letter to the editor today in the Messenger complaining of a uni-sex bathroom in the new Lowe's in Decatur. Didn't quite understand it. I don't think guys and gals are supposed to be in there at the same time, nor does the thought sound particularly enticing.

Messenger Forum

The Messenger has opened up a public forum on its web site with the first question posed being one of "Should the DHS campus be closed for lunch." So far it looks like they aren't censoring the posts (I can't imagine that being true for too long). And so far it has deteriorated into name calling (there's even one commentor calling another one "gay"). And I have yet to see one hot girl posted.

. . . is. (I personally am disgusted by the poll).

More State of The Union Speech Excerpts

If the following is true, thats-a-good. It probably has nothing to do with government, but good nonetheless: "In recent years, America has become a more hopeful Nation. Violent crime rates have fallen to their lowest levels since the 1970s. Welfare cases have dropped by more than half over the past decade. Drug use among youth is down 19 percent since 2001. There are fewer abortions in America than at any point in the last three decades, and the number of children born to teenage mothers has been falling for a dozen years in a row."
