I Went To College Game Day

And you can send the Pulitzer for The Best Photo Taken With An iPad  to my home address.

I'm replacing Joe Duty at the Messenger on Monday.

Edit: Come on! A momma holding an infant and doing the tomahawk chop.  A bubba with a Florida shirt. Cheerleaders. The borderline famous mural in the background representing Fort Worth on national TV. This is art people!  You guys who don't understand make me want to cut my ear off!

And Another - Louisiana

2014 better step up its game.

College Station Furniture Store Offered Refunds If Aggies Won By More Than 10

Wait a second. A chain furniture store sold over $1 million in furniture in 11 days? To paraphrase a line from JFK, "Sir, I find your story simply unbelievable."

Tarrant County DA's Office Gets Into Death Prediction Game

Good grief.

Index Ads: TV and Politics

Concerning the TV: Man, $209 was a fortune back then. And all you got was a crappy 23 inches and over the air channels (four of them if you were lucky). That has to be a black and white TV, right? They didn't have color yet.

Love the George Bush for Senate ad. Even funnier because they didn't spell his opponent's name correctly. I had to look him up on Wikipedia. Fantastic stuff:

Yarborough rode in the Dallas motorcade in which John F. Kennedy was assassinated on November 22, 1963. He was in a convertible with Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson, Lady Bird Johnson (who sat between Yarborough and Johnson) . . . .

In 1964, Yarborough again won the primary without a runoff and went on to general election victory with 56.2 percent in LBJ's 1964 Democratic landslide. His Republican Party (GOP) opponent was future president George Herbert Walker Bush, who attacked Yarborough as a left-wing demagogue and for his vote in favor of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Yarborough denounced Bush as an extremist to the right of that year's GOP nominee for president Barry M. Goldwater and as a rich easterner and a carpetbagger trying to buy a Senate seat . . . .

Say What?

Dallas media is abuzz this morning about this vehicle which was "caught between" two trains. Get this: They guy survived.

Fox 4 story.

  • Shootin' Blind will make your jaw drop. (Once again, it was a different time.)
  • I may sponsor a Liberally Lean "Hootenanny".
  • There's an odd item about a sick person in the bottom right corner. Everyone is scrambling to Arizona but no mention of what the connection is with Bridgeport or the type of illness.
  • I want to party with the Jacksboro Quartet.
  • Just glancing through issues around this time frame, there seems to be an incredible amount of tension between the city council and the mayor. Here the council took action to take more responsibility in "assisting the Mayor in operating City business."

Random Friday Morning Thoughts

  • The former Tarrant County judge and Wise County (short time) lawyer was finally mentioned in the Star-Telegram
  • Those old Index posts are good stuff right? I get some online criticism but most people I talk to love them.
  • "Thank you" and "I'm sorry" are powerful words.
  • Sports radio has blown up about this Jerry Jones article. I haven't read it yet but they say it is insane. Since I'm not a fan of the NFL, I'd rather have a crazy and entertaining owner than a winning football team.
  • Aggie thoughts on the win against #8 South Carolina: (1) Wow. (2) As a Baylor fan, I know what a fantastic offense looks like. That was a frighteningly good offense. (3) And that wasn't against Stephen F. Austin. That was South Carolina. At home. (4) South Carolina had won 18 consecutive home games. (5) South Carolina had won their season opener for the last 14 seasons. (6) QB Kenny Hill broke Johnny Football's all time Aggie passing yardage record. (7) There was no greater proof of how the Aggie offense could do whatever they wanted to more than that last drive. With 9:30 on the clock and at their own 19, the Aggie's decided to run down some clock since they had the game won. They went on an 18 play drive which ended with 40 seconds on the clock. Holy, cow.
  • Some conservative radio hosts yell, "We must eliminate ISIS!!"  How naive.  Like the poor, they will "always be with us."
  • If I were Jerry Jones, I'd make the last preseason game free. Just tell the season ticket holders that the game isn't included in the package (they won't care) and then just open up the gates. He'd  make a fortune in beer sales and parking alone.
  • Speaking of, the chairman of the Republican party of Dallas County angrily proclaimed on twitter last night that there was no reason that parking should cost $60 at Cowboys Stadium. Two things: (1) Uh, capitalism and free market? and (2) He actually spent his time last night going to that game!
  • I have a stranger who emails me from time to time, and I have no doubt that it is law enforcement trying to bait me into having contact with a fake underage girl. And it's not generic. The emailer started the contact by referencing people I know in Wise County ("she" likes someone in the probation department). After I wasn't particularly chatty, "she" sent me a very inappropriate photo and then quickly followed up with, "I'm so sorry, I sent that to you by accident. Please delete it."  I ignored it. Yesterday, after months of inactivity, I received an email from that account with no text but  just a face pic of two females. One who is probably 20 and the other who is ambiguously younger.
  • Woke up during the pouring rain storm last night. Loved it. I tried to stay awake just to listen but there's no way.
  • I caught myself talking into the mirror last night and then thought, "Holy crap, I've turned into Robert De Niro in Taxi Driver!"
  • Aledo and Cedar Park play a high school football game at Baylor's new stadium tonight. I'm thinking about going.
  • In the last five days, if you had owned Radio Shack stock, you would have doubled your money. It's gone from 70 cents to over $1.40. (Their are rumors someone is about to come in and bail the company out.)
  • Several years ago I told a Jacksboro friend that there would be nothing more entertaining than to give up my felony docket and start a second blog that did nothing but focus on the Wise County DA's office, it's prosecutors, and how they handle their cases. If defense lawyers thought they had a case they were getting screwed on, they could tell me about it and I could do a post on that particular case. I still think about that.

Kid Not Happy Mom Is Pregnant

Preach on, little man.

Index 10/9/64

  • Huge steer!
  • John Tower was in Jacksboro? (With a Goldwater reference)
  • I'm not sure what the product liability laws were back then, but Elmer Gober probably had a decent lawsuit on his hands.
  • The Bridgeport football game story seems as if it was written by a PR guy on Bridgeport's staff.

Random Thursday Morning Thoughts

  • A Texas jury acquitted the guy of murdering a drunk driver who killed his two sons. I questioned the legal defense of "I didn't do it" the other day. That was dumb on my part. When I finally looked into it, the prosecution had basically no proof. (Then again, a jury is much more inclined to find a "reasonable doubt" when they don't care that much about the alleged crime.)
  • Probably my weirdest nemesis is the Josh-Gordon-Is-Not-The-Best-Receiver-In-The-NFL nemesis. Dude
  • I'm pretty sure I saw a fire truck with lights on turn down the Decatur high school entryway this morning.
  • I finally went through the traffic roundabout they put in at Harmon and 287 (Harmon is the last exit before you hit I-35 going into Fort Worth.)  Who came up with that idea? We aren't smart enough to handle that.
  • Traffic was shut down on I-30 and Beach east of downtown Fort Worth yesterday afternoon after someone jumped off the bridge into traffic. This morning we learned it was a 17 year old high school girl. Good lord.
  • While talking to the Wise County DA yesterday he tells me, "By the way, we've got our online Fantasy Football draft at seven o'clock tomorrow." Sheesh! Short notice!  Just another example of the government pushing the common man around.
  • You probably have to be weird to listen to this (I did), but if you want to listen to a moderately conservative appellate judge (Reagan appointee Richard Posner of the Seventh Circuit) absolutely brutalize Wisconsin Assistant Attorney General Timothy Samuelson on Tuesday during oral arguments about Wisconsin's ban on same-sex marriage, listen to this. I was cringing. (From a legal background, all you need to know is that the "Loving case" is a reference to the Supreme Court case striking down a ban on interracial marriage.) Note to future legal advocates of a ban on same sex marriage, if a judge asks you why it is justified, do not say, "Tradition."
  • I got sucked into the Abilene Christian/Georgia State game last night on ESPNU which was wildly entertaining. And Bridgeport's Jace Hudson had a touchdown catch (video).
  • Me in January of 2009: "I don't buy the 'President Bush has kept us safe since 9/11' line. If some terrorist wanted to cross the Mexican border and set off a bomb in a Las Vegas casino, it could be done tomorrow." Fox News headline today: "Al Qaeda magazine hints of looming attack; urges bombing of Vegas".
  • I'm insane now: A picture of a covered RG3 statute statue [edit: I use "statute" way too much] posted by the twitter account of Baylor Stadium (yep, a stadium has its own twitter account) who throws down some pretty funny comedy.
  • The Star-Telegram has a big story today of how a barge has been brought in to suck water out of Lake Bridgeport. (Complete with photos and a video.)  It's located just south of Twin Hills.

I'm guessing that "healthy" is a nice way to say something else.
And then this news note appears in the next edition a week later:

I Owe Frost Insurance Agency An Apology

I made fun of their production value yesterday. While glancing at another Index last night I realized they were doing a bit. And not a bad bit for 1964.

Random Index Excerpt

Check out the school enrollment. (And I'm not sure Chico and Decatur did an actual count.)

And I love the game summary from Bridgeport vs. Azle. It is like the box score was handed to someone who had never seen a game before and told to write a story about it.

Random Wednesday Morning Thoughts

  • That Bryan Cranston/Julia Louis-Dreyfus kiss at The Emmy's when compared to the kiss they shared on Seinfeld: Oh, my.
  • When I was a kid, I was lucky if there were two college football games on TV every weekend. There are almost 650 regular season games set for this college football television season.
  • There's a "cop watch" group in the metroplex which videos any cop when he makes a traffic stop. Absolutely 100% legal, by the way -- so long as you don't interfere. (But Fox 4, where I learned of the story, interviewed a "former police chief of Cockrell Hill and a law enforcement expert" about the group. If I wanted to hold myself out as a law enforcement "expert", history tells me you don't want the corruption plagued Cockrell Hill Police Department on your resume.)
  • The Collin County grand jury is meeting on the possible murder case against Frisco resident, and woman of Indian descent, Pallavi Dhawan (the case is the one about the kid who died of unknown causes and she didn't immediately call the police.) Look, grand juries don't meet about ONE CASE unless something is up. Unless the prosecutors are idiots (wouldn't rule that out over there), they are trying to convince them not to indict. If they were smart they would simply begin, "This case cannot be won at trial because any rational juror would have a reasonable doubt. And if the jury did convict, which they shouldn't under the law, the appellate court would throw it out." But the frightening thing is that her defense attorney has raised so much hell in the press that he's probably hacked some prosecutor off who now has the frightening attitude of, "I don't care if we lose, let's take a shot. Indict her."
  • I could teach a law school course based upon that last bullet point alone. (Criminal law, criminal procedure, appellate law, and ethics are all involved.)
  • The Junior In The House has always been in high school band. Sheesh, what a beating in time commitment she goes through. I had no idea.
  • ESPN's College Game Day is in Sundance Square on Saturday morning. I might go to that.
  • It looks like a Dallas cop shot someone last night. Man, Dallas police kill a lot of people. All justified, I'm sure.
  • As Labor Day approaches, have we ever had an official audit regarding all the money raised by the Jerry Lewis Telethons?
  • And speaking of audits, where does the $7.5 million a year go that ESPN pays some group called Little League International for the rights to televise the Little League World Series?
  • Blew past Bill O'Reilly last night and he had some female radio talk show host on and asked her, "What would you specifically do to stop ISIS?"  You think anyone who works in the high levels of the Pentagon turned up the TV volume and thought, "Yes. Tell me. I need help."
  • "HBO's Real Sports With Bryant Gumbel will revisit the story of Nick Schuyler, the former University of South Florida football player and sole survivor of a 2009 accident that killed Schuyler's three fishing companions when their boat capsized in the Gulf of Mexico." Man, I watched it last night and it was fantastic. There's is a 100% chance I would have died. The story is going to be a movie which I'm excited about except that it will star The Rock.
  • Goofy Granbury ISD and/or the constable's office has notified parents that a "uniformed deputy" will visit a student at his home or parent's workplace for an unexcused absence.
  • A shooting instructor in Arizona was, for some reason, teaching a nine year old how to shoot an Uzi, and she ended up accidentally killing him. BagofNothing had the footage of the incident moments before the shooting.

I'd Avoid I-35 East

Look what happens when power lines go down in Corinth and cross both north and south bound lanes causing them to be shut down.

Remember This Morning When I Said A USC Cornerback Hurt His Ankles Saving His Nephew?

We might just have our first crazy story of the college football season. A guy from Notre Dame once had a fake girlfriend. A guy from USC may have a fake nephew. Or a nephew who wasn't drowning.

Developing . . .

And we've already got comedy (LaQuan McGowan is a Baylor offensive lineman listed at 6'7", 390):

I'm Going To Guess The Parents Don't Quite Understand

I have no idea how this ended.

Random Ads From Same Page of Bridgeport Index 6/26/64

Have to love the production value:

Hand cranked. $9.88 in 1964? Man, that's pricey.  You're mom may have yelled through the screen if you boys wanted some homemade ice cream, but it sure was a more expensive simpler time and place.

Source page.

  • Wow. Plane lands on FM 920. Looks like some high tone college administrators from Colorado. (Hey, where is Mr. Fred Glass in that photo!!!)
  • Shootin' Blind takes a shot at a local business guy, Decatur, and the courthouse workers.
  • A strike? We had unions here? Five men beaten? The Rangers called in? District judge restraining order?

Random Tuesday Morning Thoughts

  • House Republicans are filing a silly lawsuit against President Obama and have hired a lawyer who bills $500 an hour to do it. And the taxpayer foots the bill.
  • The female vampire on the ATT Uverse commercial who asks, "Is it the biting? I can stop!", makes me laugh. And I've seen it a ton of times.
  • The Sixth Grader In The House went to her first softball team meeting the other day. "What'd ya think?" I asked her once she got back. Her response: "I think this team is going to be wheels off."
  • A 28 year old first grade teacher in Arlington was allegedly drunk during an in-service day on Friday. KXAS reported last night that "concerned co-workers called the police."  I'm not sure the co-workers motivation was out of "concern". There would be other ways to handle that.
  • “There are so many different ways to consume TV. People don’t necessarily watch them when they air anymore. The most DVRed show of the past season was The Blacklist. Game of Thrones was the most pirated show. And Duck Dynasty was the most VCR-taped.” - Seth Meyers hosting the Emmy's last night.
  • The Wise County Courthouse elevator needs $70,000 in repairs. Riding it is like going back in time. The elevator doors shut and then this old metal gate slides over the doors. Everyone who rides it momentarily thinks, "I'll never get out of this thing." I'm not sure I've ridden it in the past decade.
  • I bet I've watched more DPS Trooper videos of them interacting with stopped motorists than anyone in Wise County -- even their bosses or prosecutors. And I could be a heck of an evaluator of ability. By and large, they are incredibly professional, but there are a couple who look like they are one comment away from drawing down on someone. I've seen some do some Christian witnessing on the way to jail. I've seem some be borderline inappropriate flirting with a cute arrestee. Every now and then, one will casually mention on tape that he's working his shift simply due to a grant and/or overtime. But mostly they play it by the book. And they are all aware of the book.
  • Sports Notes: (1) Hey, I'm having a hard time defending Ahmad Dixon these days -- I'm not sure he shouldn't be suspended for this, (2) Shin-Soo Choo having season ending surgery makes the Rangers season beyond ridiculous, (3) The Tickets's annual "Fight Night" was scheduled on the same night as aTm/South Carolina? (4) A star USC cornerback has injured both ankles after jumping off a balcony to save his drowning nephew.
  • Learned from the radio yesterday: Wilford Brimley was only 49 years old when he starred as an elderly man in Cocoon. That's insane.
  • After reading through the political opinions in the early 1960 Indexes, I'm stunned about how little things have changed.
  • My lawn doesn't look as good as usual despite watering it the same amount. I think what I did wrong was I forgot to raise the blade on the lawnmower back in June like I normally do, so it wasn't as allowed to grow as high as it has in the past to protect itself from the sun. (I think that would be Neil Sperry's diagnosis. I know you were concerned.)

The Most Violent ALS Ice Bucket Challenge Ever

Shut it down. Let's go home. (But assuming she's ok, that was some top notch comedy right there.)

Wise County Police Work: 1964

Officer Pennartz was a real life Sheriff Andy Taylor.  And I love how the police chief's home is referenced in the story.  (I tried to find the ending because I really want to know what happened to Raymond Stutt of Paradise, but I couldn't. Sounds like the Decatur police had him in "Vineyard" -- wherever that is -- but we may never know.)

Edit: Pennartz left the force the next year.

Random 1964 Wise County History

Saw this ad in the Index archives.  Chico had a roller rink? And that new $20,000 rink was never built was it? (There has to be some Chico historian out there.)

Bridgeport Bull Hype Video

Has this been going on for long? With this type of production value? They've come a long way from "the newspaper is here boys, gather over here and line for your picture."

If there is one for Decatur or any other Wise County school, let me know.

Teacher vs. Lion

Mirror- This is the moment a teacher cheated death in front of her pupils after being attacked by a lion when she entered its cage as a volunteer. The animal leapt on Roxana Guevara and tossed her around like a rag doll at a circus in the Peruvian city of Cuzco. Miraculously, she managed to get up and stagger to safety after it freed her from its jaws as the lion tamer chased it around the cage, trying to beat it with a stick. Roxana, who had taken her pupils along to watch the show, suffered severe scratches to her neck and chest. Speaking from her hospital bed, Roxana relived her terrifying ordeal. Ironically, she said volunteered to demonstrate the lion wasn’t aggressive.

Man, even though she's fine, that's hard to watch.  At least the kids will learn to respect and fear wild animals.

Forney Woman With Kids Wrongly Stopped By Police

Story and video. Edit: Updated link.

Cops can stop and detain someone when they have a "reasonable suspicion" that some type of criminal activity is afoot. This is what happen when the cops know that the courts, with a wink, have obliterated that standard which for all practical purposes lets them get away with detaining someone based upon a "guess" or a "hunch".

Once again, the aspect of "big government" no one seems to care about.

And I'm a little worried about the exercise of their Freedom of the Press right by Channel 8 here. "Accidentally"?

We've Got A Decatur Puppy Dog Alert

I don't have it but I know who does. They are looking for the owner so I thought I'd help out. It was found this morning.

Bridgeport Index 3/20/64

I'm giving up the chronological order and will just jump around on posting future issues.
  • Check out the expressions on the faces of those girls. It's like they were taken from a concentration camp and told to pose for the photo. Fantastic.  Take note of the cute girl in the scarf and the one with the glasses. And I love the one on the far left who is sending some message with here eyes.
  • What is that "Big Wind from California" reference in connection with Jack Ruby at the end of Shootin' Blind?
  • Polio Serum. Wow.
  • Burglars take money from funeral home but return it and leave it in the hearse.
  • Bridgeport's track meet will include Lewisville, Frisco and Plano. And I bet those "towns" had just one high school back then.
  • I  never knew there was an "old Chevrolet building on Halsell street."

Random Monday Morning Thoughts

  • I live in a subdivision not far from a creek.  About two weeks ago I started noticing a ton -- and I do mean a ton -- of birds everywhere and this weekend it dawned on me: Doves.
  • I watched the first episode of The Knick over the weekend. It's a medical drama set in 1900 New York starring Clive Owen as a cocaine addicted doctor. It was intense. It was fantastic. It was like House on acid.
  • Texas Police Chief shot dead
  • One thing I noticed about the 1960s Bridgeport Indexes I've been going through is that there was a poll tax imposed at the time. In fact, there was a local vote on the issue and it was supported by a 2 to 1 margin. (Those issues are like a snapshot in time, and I'm posting quite a few of them this week.)
  • Most of adult life I didn't have kids in the house but paid a fortune in school taxes. Socialism! And, you know, I didn't mind paying it one bit if I were helping contribute to the greater good.
  • Texas Monthly's latest issue has a great article on the state of UT's athletic program. Let me tell you something, the Empire better keep an eye on new AD Steve Patterson and give him a very short leash.  (And doesn't he resemble the stuttering lawyer from my cousin Vinny?)
  • Patterson defended players not being paid saying saying that, in essence, the school is doing them a favor. After all, "No corporations are going to be lining up to pay them money out of high school." Sheesh, buddy. That's because the slowly dying NCAA won't let them get paid by a corporation. Get ready, these times they are a changing. You don't think a corporation wouldn't sponsor players on Rivals.com Top 100 of 2014 list if they could? Patterson, by the way, earns $1.4 million a year.
  • Texas Monthly, by the way, is my favorite magazine of all time.
  • Up until 1989, only a metal rail separated those being subjected to a Texas execution and those who were there from the public to observe it. (Source: Texas Monthly.) More death penalty trivia: The first man in the U.S. ever executed by lethal injection was a Fort Worth man, Charlie Brooks. His last words will make some of you crazy.
  • Football: (1) Denver receiver Wes Welker had his third concussion in less than a year, and Sam Bradford tore his ACL for the second time in a year.  The NFL won't survive fifty years from now --- Too big. Too fast. (2)  Michael Sams (the guy who just happens to be gay) sacked Johnny Football on Saturday and flashed the money sign. I'm surprised ESPN didn't go 24/7 coverage on that event alone. (3) I watched some of Sam Houston State play Eastern Washington on Saturday and almost had my eyes burned due to the red field. (Photo.) (4) I think Tony Romo has a tiny, tiny limp. That back isn't going to make it through the season. (5) Ticket reference: Michael Irvin was in the booth for the Cowboys game on Saturday and every time he spoke I could only hear, "Allen ISD, Closed! Alvord ISD, Closed!"
  • More mothers are crying this morning than at any other time of the year.
  • The Junior in the House has four minutes between classes.
  • Journalist James Foley was executed by a 23 year old British rapper who joined ISIS?
  • I woke up in the middle of Friday night and watched two episodes of The Simpsons -- part of an FXX marathon. I really hadn't watched that show in years but I had heard that the first part of this weekend would have shows from its "golden years". Verdict: I had forgotten how incredibly clever and funny that thing was.
  • If Jon Stewart doesn't target Fox News coverage of yesterday's earthquake, he's missing out on a goldmine. Case in point, reporter Claudia Cowan, showing a shot of several broken wine bottles on a convenience store floor, said, "As you can see, guys, there is just total devastation here."
  • I mentioned that my high school class had somewhat spare Dallas Cowboy Scott Laidlaw speak at our Bridgeport All Sports Banquet. I learned the 1974 class had Lee Roy Jordan speak.
  • Double motorcycle death in Grapevine over the weekend.
  • There's an ad for a diet pill on The Ticket and it says it is "only for people who are overweight by thirty pounds" and to "discontinue to take this product if you lose too much weight too quickly."  I yell at the radio every time. What lies.
  • Fascinating story of a guy accused of shooting a drunk driver who killed two of his young sons in Alvin, Texas. Even more fascinating in that his defense is not "I'm sorry, I lost my mind. Give me probation" or "I was temporarily insane -- find me not guilty". Nope, his defense is, "I didn't shoot him."
  • Holy crap: Official Liberally Lean baseball player Chris Davis is batting .191!
  • Someone mentioned that there are people dying all over the world because of a lack of clean water and people in the U.S. are dumping it over their heads.

(Edit: Moved to Top) Wise County Random Thought Girl From 50 Years Ago

From the front page of a 1964 Bridgeport Index. Read that caption. She was 19 at the time.

Edit: Look what I found!!!!

Last Place Team. 100 Degrees. Day Before School.

This is what you get.

(Although I have thought about searching Stubhub for a ticket right behind time plate during the final days. They have to be dirt cheap.)

Gold Has Been Found In The Bridgeport Index Archives!!!

Check out that kid, second row, second photo.  Handsome. Obvious great sense of humor. Classy dresser. Looks just like me. Wait!!! That is me!!!!

To quote Raising Arizona:

H.I. (as he looks at their new baby): He's a scandal in't he, he's a little outlaw.
His wife (concerned): Naw, he-he-he's a good boy.
H.I. (still looking straight ahead): He ain't too good, you can tell by that twinkle in his eye.

But what's up with the kid with the phone that he is using as a prop? No one told me I could have tricked up my photo and do a bit!

Random Golf Volunteer Biting It

Just hypnotic. The way both legs hit the ground after the faceplant made me think for a second he was hit by a sniper.
