My Head Still Hurts

I woke up at 4:00 a.m. last night to the noise of my smoke alarm in my bedroom. The thing wasn't going off to signal smoke in the house - nope, it was an occasional and sporadic slight "beep" to let me know that its battery was low. It drove me insane.

Now That Fact About Byron Nelson Was Interesting

As all the news stations gush over the life and death of a golfer (and, yeah, he did seem to be a good guy), I thought this fact was interesting: Nelson was married to his first wife for 50 years until she died. He later remarried and stayed married for another 19 years (until his death.) That's pretty amazing. And I also learned he didn't drink - a bit of irony for any of you that have visited the "Pavilion" at the Byron Nelson Golf Tournament in Las Colinas. (If you google for images using "Byron Nelson" as the search term, the above image comes up on the first page.)

Criminal Justice Rant

In case you missed it, the Texas Department of Criminal Justice says it needs to build three more prisons at a cost of around a half billion dollars to solve prison overcrowding. That's your money. And, in a few more years, they'll just come back for more. And on a related criminal justice news, this blog points out that our efforts to outlaw homemade meth - by such brainchilds as requiring us to jump through hoops to get some Advil at Walmart- hasn't curtailed meth use at all. The result is now we import it from Mexico, where it is more pure (hence the term "ice"), and fund a bunch of crazed Mexican drug lords at the same time. Good times.

University of Michigan fans are upset because the school's cheerleaders look like . . . uh . . . soccer moms. This trend needs to end. Now.

Who is more likely to get called in for an interview based upon name alone: "Cody" or "Demetrius"? ABC's 20/20 says Cody gets the nod(surprised?). More interesting is the 20 "whitest" male and female names and the "blackest" male and female names.

Unnecessary Roughness

I noticed that the Texas Longhorns will be playing Division I-AA Sam Houston State this weekend. It'll be so bad that, the best I can tell, Las Vegas won't even set a line on this game. But I was surprised to learn that it will be the first time Texas has played a I-AA school in 14 years. Edit: The DMN says the line is Texas by 63. It's the largest margin I ever remember.

PSP Movies?

A buddy just called me about this site he found. He has a PSP player and was stunned to see a site where you could download movies that are currently in theaters. (See list above.) Must be a catch.

A Sign The Apocalypse Is Upon Us

Remember the Frisco 5th grade teacher who took her students, after receiving permission slips from their parents, to the Dallas Museum of Modern Art? At least one parent objected after the fact because there was, and I am not making this up, nudity at the museum. So the Frisco ISD backed her up, right? That's a no-brainer, right? Nope. Tonight they decided to keep her on paid leave until the end of the year and after that she will no longer have a job there.

An HD Screenshot

I don't recall ever coming across an HD screenshot on the Internet before so I thought I'd repost it here. (Click to enlarge although it kinda makes you feel like Jennifer's dentist.) And I may be the biggest idiot in the world because I've got an HD ready TV but have yet to get the HD satellite. Every time I start to I hear that something bigger/better/more features will be coming out "in a couple of months."
