Random Wednesday Morning Thoughts




It's the 10 year anniversary of Dale Hansen's Unplugged edition on gay NFL player Michael Sams. It landed him on Oprah, but also gave rise to the greatest remix of all time. 

  • A car rammed through an ER room in Austin last night injuring five and killing the driver. Here's a video of the immediate aftermath which is quite the scene. 


  • Republican George Santos is gone from the House and was replaced by a Democrat in a special election last night. He won by 8 points. 


  • That's quite the headline. "Kami Ludwig, 34, was booked on Monday in the killing of William Shane Nolen, who was a former associate judge in the 323rd District Court [in Tarrant County]. Nolen was in November 2019 fired from the court, which handles juvenile matters . . . ."


  • Fancy homes in California about to slid down a cliff due to rainstorms makes me nervous.



  • The Republican House voted to impeach the Director of Homeland Security by a single vote. It stands absolutely no chance of passing in the Senate. 


    • Someone tell Ronny there actually is a Senate. 

  • Republican-on-Republican crime.  Ken Paxton took a shot at Sen. Cornyn for voting for the Ukrainian aid package, and Cornyn returned fire. 


  • The fact the conviction happened on Valentine's Day eve makes this borderline romantic. (But I'm trying to wrap my head around how verdicts for Insurrectionists are still coming in while the Führer of the Insurrection is going to be the Republican candidate for President.)


  • The grift will be large. Video.

  • Let me tell you, this is wild. Mistaking an acorn falling on a car as a gunshot, the deputy unloaded his weapon into a patrol vehicle with a handcuffed guy inside.  Video. Amazingly, no one was hurt.  Here's the full press release of the Sheriff's Office on the incident which still hasn't been picked up by the national media.   Here's a local news report.



  • Legal news. It's unrelated, but the judge has quite the Wikipedia page: "Devine was an anti-abortion activist in the 1980s.At a June 2012 rally, Devine said he had been arrested 37 times for protesting at abortion clinics. . . . In 2004, Devine was sued for his refusal to take down a painting of The Ten Commandments on display in his Harris County courtroom."

  • The Business Second: A typo in an earnings report caused the stock of Lyft to skyrocket almost 70% in after hours trading yesterday until everyone figured it out.


  • That's a weird resignation of the Denton PD chief . . . .

Random Tuesday Morning Thoughts




Decatur's football coach abruptly left. He would stay eight years in Frisco going 42-44 at Independence High School before "retiring" at age 56. But eight months ago he was hired as athletic director at Fort Worth Christian. 

  • At about 5:00 a.m. this morning, the Senate finally approved a $50 billion aid package to Ukraine on a 70-29 vote. The MAGA controlled House, in typical isolationist form, is expected to reject. it.


  • The Decatur Varsity girls basketball team had a playoff game last night against Wichita Falls. That is, if you can call it a game. Good lord: 

  • "Dash-cam footage released of the Bombardier Challenger 600 jet crash on Interstate 75 in Naples, Florida" from last Friday. 

  • Fox4Terry was on the job last night. "Irving police say two people injured, both expected to recover in this overnight fiery crash. This occurred along SB Loop 12 at the Trinity River and is expected to take hours to clean up."

  • Trump met his deadline to appeal to the Supreme Court yesterday about his "absolute immunity" claim. Here's the status: The D.C. Insurrection case is still on hold. The Supreme Court, in addition to deciding whether to hear the immunity claim, will more pressingly decide whether that stay is dissolved or remains in place. Expect a decision on that probably within 10 days. 

  • Sheesh.


  • We've got a photo of the shooter at Joel Osteen's church.  And some more details: "While working security, two off-duty officers confronted Moreno, who fired several rounds [with an AR-15] and indicated that she had a bomb. The officers returned fire, killing her and injuring a 56-year-old man in the hip and the 5-year-old boy who was with Moreno."

    • Fox News hates transgendered people so much that it jumped a gun on a headline yesterday before retracting it.


  • This will officially turn the Republican Party into the Trump Party. He will run it all.

     

  • I hate Paxton, but I agree with him on this. This isn't the Whistleblowers suit but the securities case from Collin County where the special prosecutors have been whining about not being paid for over nine years. 

  • An old tweet by Troy Aikman came back to haunt him yesterday.  I bet that guy is insufferable. 

  • Inflation numbers were just released for January at 3.1% compared to prices from a year before. It's slowing but not quite as much as expected (I think.)  The Fed wants that number at 2%.

Random Monday Morning Thoughts

snowstorm hit Raleigh, NC.

  • A woman with a rifle entered Joel Osteen's church in Houston yesterday and opened fire. Somehow she didn't hit anyone, but she was shot dead. Sad note: A 5 year old child that was with her was hit as well.


  • It was an arrest by Rhome PD so everyone might want to withhold judgment. 

  • Trump had a big weekend: 
    • On Saturday night at a rally, he said something which would have disqualified any other candidate in the past. Video. But nothing matters any more. 


    • What the heck was he talking about the night before? Video. (He also referred to 9/11 as "7/11" and made numerous other gaffes.)

    • It's not a cult. This is from Mar-a-Lago on Saturday night. And that big eagle in the background seems very familiar. 


    • Earlier in the evening, Cruz opted out of Cancun and decided to go to Florida.

  • The manslaughter case involving the hit and run of a Baylor student ended with a guilty verdict and a 10 year sentence.  The defense called some interesting witnesses:


  • Relevant to Wise County as he is trying to buy an election here, Texas Monthly newly profiles one of the men behind the West Texas Oilman PAC.

  • World record holder dead.

  • The Business Second™ from Friday.

  • Super Bowl Quick Hits:
    • Travis Kelce almost knocking over his head coach shows what a blockhead that guy is. Video.  (And did you see him loaf during the final overtime drive? Video.)

    • Oddest moment of the night: A star defensive player blowing out his Achilles while running onto field from the sideline. Video.

    • Jesus had a heck on an ad budget last night.

    • They Taylor Swift deep state conspiracy theory turned out to be true as confirmed by the President of the United States after the game.

    • Alcohol prices at the Super Bowl.

    • Flashback to 2020. "Great State of Kansas."

  • When is the last time you saw a coach of a major program (UCLA) leave to become the offensive coordinator of another school (Ohio State)? He must have expected to be fired next year. 

  • There was another big wreck south of Rhome on Friday evening. It's a death trap down there.
