Random Monday Morning Thoughts




It was only 10 years ago that the name of an officer would be readily released without the need for an open records request.

  • On Saturday morning, the official Wise County Republican Party issued a statement denouncing the West Texas Oil Man PAC for meeting with a known white supremist and antisemite, and announced that it was donating to a third party the $2,000 it had recently received from the PAC.
    • No word yet whether a Wise County Texas House candidate will do a similar act with the $55,000 he has received. 

  • Israel enters Gaza. (Sidenote: It's Ok to be pro-Israel and not want to see innocent Palestinians die.) Various news headlines:



     

  • On September 24th, DFW hit 101 degrees breaking an all time record. Now we have a freeze warning:

    • Oh, come on. 

  • And now another mass shooting in the United States is already old news.
     

  • Who would have thought that a guy who one-third of the Republican Party wanted to hang couldn't gain traction?

  • Let's check in on Fox News. Oh, no! We've lost David Spiller (R-Jacksboro)!

  • Who knows how he died, but his recent autobiography revealed he was pretty full throttle in the area of self-medication for years.


  • Let me tell you, Junior, it ain't the dirty libs who are complaining about Halloween. 

  • He really did. The Senator he was dogging lost three fingers at age 9 on his left hand "when grinding meat in his family’s butcher shop."  Ronny Jackson, whether drunk or not, embarrasses Wise County every week.

  • Very random discovery: Brigham Young had 55 wives, and here is a list of every one of them. And don't forget the 57 children.

Random Friday Morning Thoughts




He was one of the first to jump on the anti-federal government bandwagon which is the current mainstay of Texas Republican politics. (From the cover of the Star-Telegram on 10/23/23.)

  • A Wise County high profile aggravated assault on a peace officer conviction was affirmed on appeal yesterday. It involved Royce Wood and involved the shooting of officer Rex Richie in the New Fairview area. There's quite a bit of interesting non-related law stuff in there. 
  • Still on the run this morning.
     

  • Nine individuals have been booked into the Wise County Jail within the last two days with only immigration holds on them. I presume it is related to the raid at the Indian food restaurant in Alvord mentioned in the Update yesterday.
  • The Liberally Lean Weather Team™ tells me that winds shift to out of north around 3:00 p.m. but with storms developing this evening -- although they won't become heavy until around 10:00 p.m. They will then continue throughout the night.  High tomorrow afternoon is only 59.
    • Exclusive Warning: There is a weird quirk for a quick downpour at noon today. 
  • All Texas Tech parents freaked out last night:

  • I wonder what the common denominator is? Oh, . . . 

  • "The church shared the news in an email to its [5.000 member] congregation Thursday, saying that the beloved pastor 'passed away in his sleep due to natural causes.'”  Say what?

  • It is unfathomable to me that a man this unhinged will get the Republic nomination. I sometimes think I'm living in some virtual reality game because all this crap going on around me can't possibly be real. 

  • Cooking oil incident on 407 in Denton County. 

  • Follow-up from last week. At least that gunman on the run in the Northeast was found.

  • I can't find it anywhere but in the Messenger, but our state representative, Dr. Lynn Stucky, has demanded his opponent say something about the $55,000 he has taken from the West Texas Oil Man PAC:  “I am repulsed by the antisemitic propaganda coming from people like Nick Fuentes and call on my opponent Andy Hopper to publicly denounce the actions of Defend Texas Liberty and Jonathan Stickland.”  Hopper hasn't done so, nor has he distanced himself from the PAC or Stickland's Pale Horse Strategies whose offices is where the meeting between the White Supremacist and Stickland took place.
  • Yeah, this is a bit, but who out there thought it was actually a good bit?
     

  • My gut reaction was, "Hey! Don't we have new law to stop someone from competing in a sport 'that is designated for the biological sex opposite to the student ’s biological sex'?" Yep, we do. But it's only for college sports, so this Mansfield kicker doesn't get inadvertently caught up in it.

  • Random sports thoughts: Would the Rangers be in the World Series if they had had to play home games outdoors in last summer's crazy heat? I don't think so. 

  • A very Halloween-ish photo from the Mavericks-Spurs opening game. 

  • Time which has passed since the Wise County Sheriff's Office, despite having a full male DNA profile, has failed to solve the murder of Lauren Whitener in her home at Lake Bridgeport: 4 years and 113 days.

Random Thursday Morning Thoughts



I don't remember it, but bring that back!

  • We have a ruling ruling in the Tanner Horner capital murder case. The newly appointed attorneys will remain on the case, and the higher court's stay, which has put the case on hold for two months, has been lifted.  What I predicted last week turned out to be true: (1) The Court basically punted and decided to not get involved after all, and (2) they pointed out that once the defendant testified on the record (at last week's hearing) that he wanted the new lawyers instead of his old ones, that eliminated all potential problems feared by the D.A. 

  • It felt like we got a lot of rain but, in comparison, we got robbed. 

  • American Carnage. We had another mass shooting in the U.S. last night -- this time in Maine. At least 16 (or 22, reports conflict) are dead, and the shooter is on the loose. He's a 40 year old white male, former military guy, and firearms instructor. It looks like he used an AR-15 type weapon.  The greatest country in the world, right?


     

  • We finally have a House Speaker: The normal Republicans in the House caved and elected an election denier and ultra MAGA extremist. He's Jim Jordan with a better haircut and a jacket. 

    • He believes that state government can criminalize homosexual conduct and extra-martial affairs. From 2003:

    • A year ago, his name was buried in a story in the New York Times about why some Republicans voted to not certify the election results despite no evidence of fraud. 


    • More proof that the normal Republicans caved to the crazies yesterday: Trump celebrated.

    • Oh, and in light of the Maine mass shooting, look who else is happy: 

  • The Texas House was in an uproar yesterday as it debated House Bill 4 by David Spiller (R-Jacksboro) which broadly gives state officer powers to arrest and remove individuals they think are in the country illegally. This caused one lawmaker to royally cuss out out others on the House Floor. (Video) 

    • It passed 84-60 in the middle of the night, and will now go to the Senate. Arizona passed a similar law once, and it was quickly declared unconstitutional. This one will be as well. 
    • In another immigration vote, the House approved Senate Bill 4 which criminalizes those which gives undocumented immigrants a ride in your car regardless of how long they've been in the country. You ever given a ride to someone in the country illegally? 
  • Buried in the news is a hurricane that went from a Category 1 to a Category 5 in less than 24 hours and hit Acapulco straight on. This GIF showing the development of it is really, really good.

  • Legal nerdy stuff: Here's a PDF of the new forfeiture agreement between the Denton D.A. and law enforcement where the D.A.'s office keep 80% of the forfeiture proceeds. Just a reminder: Forfeiture is legalized government theft. Flashback:
