Random Wednesday Morning Thoughts




This case always bugged me -- although it did give rise to one of the all time great photos above. But I think some kind of rare post-trial deal was struck in this case. I can't remember. 

  • Scenes from the State of the Union:.
    • Bono and Paul Pelosi (wearing a hat to cover where his head got crushed with a hammer.)

    • A mysterious cane kept showing up on the screen as it was raised. 

    • Parents of the deceased Tyre Nichols.

    • Brandon Tsay, who disarmed the shooter responsible for killing 11 people in Monterey Park, California

    • Krysten Sinema being Krysten Sinema.

    • After heckling, she had go try and kill 101 Dalmatians. 


  • I don't exactly know what all is going on in Godley (story below), but here's a video of the last city council meeting where Mayor Acy McGehee stands up and yells "Silence!" to the crowd. (Go to around 30:30). It makes Rhome look civil.


  • This is just a drop in the bucket of the amount of fraud that went on in the Payroll Protection Program. 

  • Tarrant County Commissioners voted to buy a $340,000 tank for the Sheriff's Office yesterday . . . . oh . . . excuse me . . . I'm being told . . . 

  • Yesterday Trump was promoting allegations that Ron DeSantis is a pedophile. And he did it twice. Things are going well. 

  • This is a real score from last night. In a basketball game. Involving Weatherford. (And Weatherford is now 19-1 on the year.)

  • Follow-up from yesterday
    • Regarding the 10 year flashback I had about model/SMU player Miles Crosby, a faithful reader tells me that his brother is Maxx Crosby, a productive defensive lineman for the Las Vegas Raiders. 
    • Another faithful reader reminded me that the Texas state senator who was arrested for DWI yesterday morning has been in trouble before. 

  • Fun fact: The City of Colleyville has two Wise County guys in charge of major departments. Michael Miller (Decatur class of '88) is the Chief of Police, and the Fire Chief is Bridgeport's own Mark Cantrell.
  • This is weird out of Corpus Christi. I was trying to figure out what evidence was "lost" but no one really knows. It sounds like there was a "box or two" delivered to the D.A.'s office from the police, but now the D.A. can't find the boxes. And, truly, no one has any idea what the boxes contained. (Legal nerdy stuff: The order said that it was dismissed because of the "Richard Miles Act" which doesn't make sense -- that's a requirement the police turn over all evidence they get their hands on.) The DA will appeal. They'll win.

Random Tuesday Morning Thoughts




"At 17, he became one of the youngest stars in the industry and posed in Calvin Klein ads for jeans, underwear and the Euphoria fragrance. He has graced the pages of Esquire, GQ and Vanity Fair, to name a few." I was curious how that the SMU football career as a cornerback went so I found his stats. But he's still a model, so that's a win over most of us. 


  • Hoax bomb threats were called into Walmarts across the country with one impacting the store in North Richland Hills last night. Don't be stupid, people.

  • This probably won't ring a bell until . . . 

    • . . . you see this. It's amazing they never caught this kid. 

  • How big was that balloon?:

  • Regarding the whole Fentanyl problem as a whole, I don't understand making a recreational drug which kills people you wish to sell to. 

  • The Texas legislature is definitely back in session.  This guy is an orthopedic surgeon. 



  • The stolen monkeys from the Dallas Zoo is now old news, but I just learned the monkey-napper took them home on DART's light rail.

  • Ted Cruz didn't like the Grammy's. 

  • The Jewish Space Laser lady got to be Speaker Pro Tem yesterday.

  • Train vs. truck on Bonds Ranch Road yesterday morning. Every time I look down Bonds Ranch from 287, that two lane road is packed for as far as the eye can see. 

  • I want to groan, but he'd probably be pretty good at it. 

  • Random legal news. 
    • Every time a judicial vacancy opens up in Dallas County, Gov. Abbott appoints the same person who then gets beat the next time she has to win an election. 

       
    • I wonder about the fairness of a judge when, after he hits a mandatory retirement age, thinks that what he really wants to do is be an assistant prosecutor. 

  • Casinos might be a hard sell, but I don't know why Texas prohibits sports gambling via the Internet. Twenty-six states allow it. 

  • Is he suffering from some CTE symptoms we didn't know about?



  • New Jersey's reaction to latest Maverick's news.

  • The dead in Turkey and Syria from the earthquakes has now surpassed 5,000.

Random Monday Morning Thoughts




Chris Kyle was killed 10 years ago.  One thing that has always stuck with me was this story trying to confirm his claim he killed two would-be carjackers at a gas station station "right off highway 67" south of the metroplex.

  •  Quick hits on the Chinese balloon shoot-down: 
    • So we've had four prior Chinese balloons fly over us, three during Trump's administration and one other one during Biden's. And one went over Texas. From Fox News: 

    • Anyone got a cheaper way of bringing down a balloon other than using a $400,000 sidewinder missile?

    • If you want to blame someone for all of this, I nominate Space Force. 
    • Here's the most redneck live commentary ever of two guys videoing the shootdown. Extreme language warning. 
    • It's also distinctly America to obsess over a balloon all weekend, and not even to be aware that unemployment hit a 50 year low on Friday.
  • There's always rumors of legalized gambling coming to Texas, but the rumblings seem a little stronger this time. Pete Geren's bill would put seven casinos in Texas with two of them in DFW.

  • Ever since that icy multi-car pileup on the freeway in Fort Worth, those in charge have been quick to shut down all the NTTA toll roads during bad weather. And they don't open them back up very quickly either. I'm certain they didn't re-open until Saturday. 
  • Over the weekend at Austin's airport, a landing FedEx plane almost landed on top a departing Southwest jet. Animation here. 

  • The man Dick Cheney shot in the face in 2006 has died. 

  • Barely makes the news here: Back to back earthquakes overnight has killed at least 1,900 in Turkey. 

  • Weird: A county constable* in Eagle Pass in missing. Her auto was found in a parking lot of an apartment complex (not hers) covered in a tarp. (*I've seen her referred to as "constable", "deputy constable" and "former deputy constable.")


  • Best moment for the defense in the Alex Murdaugh trial was on Friday when the State's firearm "expert" said he was "100% certain" that spent and ejected shell casings were fired from the same gun. Buddy, your messing with junk science to start with, and there's no way you are "100% certain" about your opinion. And shame on the State for sponsoring him as a witness. The question actually came from the defense lawyer who didn't expect him to say that. Video.

  • I'm not sure I understand Harry Styles. From the Grammy's last night:

  • The Star-Telegram had a story over the weekend of how 16 homes in one neighborhood were purchased by one investment company and then bundled up to be sold as a package to other would-be investors. 

  • This is a wild story. He was still in jail as of Friday on charges he robbed a Credit Union in Tulsa in December. 



  • More firearm legal news on the heels of the 5th Circuit holding unconstitutional a law banning firearm possession by someone subjected to a domestic abuse protective order:
    • On Wednesday, the 5th Circuit will hear arguments on whether a federal law banning firearm possession who is under state criminal indictment, but not convicted, is constitutional. Prediction: It doesn't stand a snowball's chance. 
    • On Friday, an Oklahoma federal judge struck down on Second Amendment grounds a federal law banning firearm possession "by  users of substances made unlawful by the federal Controlled Substances Act", including marijuana. (Honestly, I had never even heard of that one.)
    • Side note: These federal laws are rarely enforced.
  • So Mark Cuban bet the farm by trading for a guy who believes the Earth is flat and was suspended earlier this year for anti-Jewish comments and then refused to apolozize?
