Random news blurb I ran across.

  • There's nothing that gets your adrenalin running like hearing or reading the words, "If you live in [insert town/city/county] take cover immediately."


  • Jacksboro photos. (Edit after posting: Fox 4's helicopter was/is flying over the town this morning doing a live stream online, and the damage is far, far worse than just to the school. It's not just the schools. Multiple homes are destroyed. I was stunned by how bad it is.):

  • Southlake house fire after the storms went through the metroplex.

  • This is Amarillo this morning. It officially clocked in at 4.6 inches. Schools are closed. 

  • Supreme Court nominee Ketanji Brown Jackson's first day of hearings went off without a hitch. She didn't cry, nor did she profess how much she loved beer. 


  • I don't think it has been reported, but I was told that the father of the victim, 24 year old Curtis Stevenson, is a deputy in the Denton County Sheriff's Office. 

  • Kid Rock told Fox's Tucker Carlson that Trump once turned to him for help crafting a tweet about ISIS before also seeking his guidance about North Korea. “I’m like, ‘What? I don’t think I’m qualified to answer this,’”  In addition to seeking advice on what “we should do about North Korea,” he said Trump also let him look at “maps” during the visit. “I’m like, you know, like, ‘Am I supposed to be in on this sh--?’ Like I make dirty records sometimes. I do.” 

  • Former Dallas Mayor Pro-Tem has been released from federal prison -- news which became apparent after the Dallas Morning News' Robert Wilonsky spotted him at a convenience store. 

  • Arlington PD released your typical drug seizure picture yesterday, but does someone know what those (metal?) marijuana leaves are? And what prescription drugs are in those boxes? Let me hear from you. 

  • The videos of the stunt are in this thread. 

  • You have to zoom in a lot, but this Dallas Cowboys Scandals Bracket will bring back a lot of memories.

  • Wondering how long the Russia takeover of Ukraine remains on the front page.

Random Monday Morning Thoughts



It was Trayvon Martin news week 10 years ago. He had actually been killed on February 26,2012, but we didn't initially hear anything about it at all. I wrote the above bullet point on March 20, 2012 when I first learned about the case.  And the press coverage quickly changed because I wrote this the very next next day: 


President Obama's famous, "If I had a son . . . ." comment didn't occur until March 23rd.

  • Standings.  Team-wise, Baylor underperformed in a wild one. Texas fell down early and never recovered. And TCU went to overtime against #1 Arizona after a controversial ending to regulation.  Oh, and the Red Raiders are handling the poaching of their coach from last year very well.  

  • Breaking: We've got an airliner crash this morning in China. And there are at least two videos in this thread showing it heading head first into the ground. The plane was a Boeing 737-800 which is different than the 737-MAX which had to be grounded a couple of years ago because of its massive problems. 

  • The biggest fire yesterday was south of Lipan, and there was also 400 acres on fire in Montague County last yesterday afternoon and a smaller one near Holiday. Wise Countians, however, were very responsible. 





  • With the wildfires blazing out of control not far from here on Friday, tell me I'm not the only one who cocked an eyebrow at this entry in Friday's Update.

  • Folks, I think there was a general theme about the weekend which just ended. 








  • Regarding the Wise County man who fell to his death off a rooftop bar in Dallas, I finally saw  this picture of the place. 

  • With Supreme Confirmation hearings for Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson beginning today, another justice is in the hospital. 

  • This just struck me at odd. In Ukraine, the news is that bombings are continuing and up to 10 million people have been displaced. Meanwhile, in America, this makes news: 

  • The facts of the case set out in the opinion are crazy. I'll never understand how people can be so gullible. 

  • I received my first traditional postcard in decades. 

  • This gal is a writer for Dave Campbell's Texas Football. I have no idea where along 183 she was but, regardless, there is state-sanctioned robbery going on out there. 


  • He used nine words and screwed up two of them. 

  • The Texans traded QB Deshaun Watson to the Browns in a deal which is crazy in all respects. The Browns gave up three #1 draft picks. And Watson received a contract of $230 million which has the most guaranteed money in the history of the league.  Side note: Worth it? This guy had a hot opinion:

  • Update: There's now an arrest warrant out for an 18 years old in the shooting death of the two Watauga teens.

Random Friday Morning Thoughts




I'll leave out the details of that particular post (it was just an accident with no alcohol or drugs involved), but it reminded me that I've been ranting against Medical Examiners for a very long time. 

  • Our top of the leader board in the Liberally Lean Tourney includes "CancunCruz's Cozy Warm Blanket", "Ken Paxton's mug shot towel" and, my favorite, "Little Ball of Introspection."   I also noticed the leader's bracket correctly picked #15 St. Peters over #2 Kentucky.

  • Wildfires in Eastland County spread to Ranger. 

  • Incredible. 

  • Donnie Nelson's lawsuit against Mark Cuban and the Mavericks is wild. Here's the ESPN story breaking the news. Here's the actual lawsuit (which is also wildly written).  Who knows if any of it is true, but I'm biased because I've been championing Cuban as a fraud and conman for years. 


    • One of the strangest aspect of the allegations is that Cuban allegedly offered Donnie Nelson $52 million to withdraw his EEOC wrongful termination complaint and keep his mouth shut. Even I find that hard to believe. And, if true, Nelson would be a moron to turn down the money. As proof of the offer, a "draft" of an unexecuted settlement agreement was attached as an Exhibit to Nelson's lawsuit -- which really doesn't prove much at all. 

  • Cruz is on the list. Cornyn is not. 

  • I'm surprised that there isn't more of a push to get Britney Griner out of Russia. But I suppose there's really not much you can do.  Side note: I hope she's never seen Midnight Express.
  • Count the red flags.


  • Good lord. "The Smith County Sheriff’s Office said Smith 'became angry at clinic staff' and retrieved a handgun from his pickup truck and then returned to the lobby and opened fire. Two doctors were struck by gunfire and both died, the sheriff’s office said. Authorities identified them as Dr. Blake G. Sinclair, 59, and Dr. Jack E. Burroughs, 75. Both were from Tyler."
    • Good lord.  

  • Update on the two 17 year olds shot and killed in a vehicle in broad daylight in Watauga: They both "lived on the same north Fort Worth street about two miles away from where the shooting happened and were students at Fossil Ridge High in the Keller school district." This is one of them who had been accepted to Texas Tech.

  • DPS has a budget of $2.3 billion and spends money on gun boats.

  • Mortgage rates hit 4% yesterday for the first time since 2019.
  • It literally never ends. 

  • I absolutely believe these numbers.
     

  • Extremely legal nerdy stuff. I knew that having a defendant plead guilty without the benefit of a plea bargain and letting the judge assess punishment is called and "open plea", but I've never heard of the same thing, with the extra fact that the State agrees to drop some of the charges, being called a "charge bargain." (From Fort Worth Court of Appeals yesterday.)

  • Before the next routine Friday bullet point, you guys realize there exists a full foreign DNA profile extracted from Lauren's body, right? And the numbers which make up that profile have been known since September 19, 2019.  
  • Time which has passed since the Wise County Sheriff's Office has failed to solve the murder of Lauren Whitener in her home at Lake Bridgeport: 987 days.
