Movie Going Fun

I normally like the Metro Cinema in Colleyville, but this was my first time yesterday in the "upstairs" theater. You would think seeing a movie that has been out for a couple of months would not be a cause for concern when it comes to the issue of seating.

Wrong.

Especially when the theater seats about 50 people (and I'm not kidding.) Here is a pic with my camera phone from my seat on the front row. Talk about the life force being sucked out of me.

Saw This On Monday

The previews for this flick have been running in theaters for months and it looked pretty good. It turned out to be, uh, ok. I'm willing to suspend belief as much as the next guy to enjoy a movie but this thing asked too much of me. Simply not believable. And, for those that have seen it, the basic legal premise that wraps the movie up in a tight little bow is, in my opinion, wrong.

And I had two power down moments when the hero uttered "I hate to lose" and "I'll see you in court" within 15 minutes of each other.

And even though I didn't see it, I just read that Tony Romo was judge. I'll say it again: The Cowboys are doomed.

Edit: Miss Japan won the thing. On Memorial Day, no less. I, for one, am not willing to forget about Pearl Harbor.

Reflections

I saw that former Baylor president Herbert Reynolds died on Friday.

I was instantly taken back to an afternoon class at law school where I had sat for half of a semester by a very attractive girl. Finally, I overheard one of her conversations and discovered that she was the daughter of Reynolds who was at that time the president of the university.

I hardly ever talked to her. She was pretty cute. That was enough to intimidate me.

But I managed to utter the words, "I didn't know you were the president's daughter."

"You never asked," came her reply.

Injustice Anywhere

Northwest High School sports has never been on my radar screen, but the girl's softball team has been interesting to follow in passing this year primarily because of pitcher Brittany Barnhill (who has like a krillion strikeouts.)

Anyway, Northwest had a playoff series scheduled this week against Flower Mound Marcus. What happened was insane:
- It's a best of three series to begin on Thursday, but the rain came down, and the series is changed to a winner take all one game series. One game? You've got to be kidding.
- The game had been scheduled to be played at Fossil Ridge but the game was moved to Saginaw Boswell because of wet conditions (which is odd, since the two fields are probably five miles from each other.)
- They play the final game on Friday, but the rain began again, so it was suspended in the bottom of the fourth. They plan on resuming the game for Saturday in Weatherford.
- On Saturday, and I have no idea how they make these last minute changes, the game is resumed in Abilene because it's too wet in Weatherford.
- "Sarah Draheim hit a 2-0 pitch over the right-field fence with no outs in the bottom of the seventh, sending Flower Mound Marcus (25-6) to its first state tournament with a 1-0 win over Justin Northwest at Abilene Christian University."

That is one wheels off playoff system.

The Indy 500 is this weekend, and for the first time in history the race will feature three women drivers. Milka Duno, Sarah Fisher (second from left), and Danica Patrick (right). The other ladies in the picture there are former driver Lyn St. James (center) and Janet Reno tennis great Billie Jean King.

From the best I can tell, an employee of Virgin Airlines decides to recreate the final scene of An Officer And A Gentleman by proposing to his girlfriend who works in (or shops in) a mall drug store. Let me get this right. He proposed to her next to the laxatives and skin cream? Makes me feel like the most romantic man in Wise County (west of Bridgeport, at least.)

Court Of Appeals Decision Today

Some may remember a horrible accident and huge lawsuit in Wise County that involved the Randy Hughes family. (See DMN coverage here and Messenger coverage here.)

The Fort Worth Court of Appeals released a decision this morning in the case that is here, but you darn near need to be board certified in personal injury law to understand it. The one part I'm certain of, however, is that$6,658,000 in exemplary damages were taken away from the Plaintiffs. There could be more to it - I'll try to figure it out.
