The Sheriff's Office Is Bent Out Of Shape Over This Guy

Burning Down The House
"BEWLEY GIVEN PROBATION IN ARSON — A Wise County jury yesterday morning sentenced Taz Thomas Bewley, 38, to 10 years of probation a day after he pleaded guilty to arson." - From the Update
I watched a little bit of the trial and, thank God, the jury gave the guy probation. He is severely physically scarred from setting himself on fire, had no criminal history, and clearly did not intend to harm anyone. (He pretty much set himself and his car on fire - a fire which moved over to a trailer home after about 15 minutes). It was more of a suicide attempt than anything else.

One More Free Speech Rant
The Washington Post ran this cartoon recently. Offensive to the pro-war crowd? Probably. But what is absolutely incredible is that the Pentagon sent this letter (pdf format) to the newspaper yesterday chastising them for running it.
Citizens can complain all they want to. America embraces the discourse.
But the government should never try to stifle protected free speech. I don't think the Bush Administration understands that at all.
Stolen From Another Blog, I Wish I Had Thought Of It
As many of you know, war protestor Cindy Sheehan was arrested in your national capitol building last night because she wore a T-Shirt that read, "2,245 Dead — How Many More??". For that, she was arrested by your capitol police.
Here's the stolen part: Did you know that in 1971, the Supreme Court said it was unconstitutional to arrest a man who wore a "F--- the Draft" T-shirt into the courthouse? (Cohen v. California, you can look it up.) So now Alito's on the court for 45 minutes and your civil liberties are already going down the toilet. You were warned.
