I Wonder How Many Fighters Are In The Air?

At the risk of getting my phone tapped without a warrant, this very innocent thought occurred to me: As the State of the Union begins (yawn), at no other time are members of our federal government all in the same place at the same time. All Senators, all Representatives, the President's cabinet, the Supreme Court, the Vice President and the President himself. What chaos it would be if there was a terrorist attack.

Sesquicentennial?

My law partner just showed me a 1956 issue of the Wise County Messenger. This is my favorite tidbit about the old Decatur Baptist College: "The first [football] game that the Decatur Baptist College team played was with Bowie High School. The victor of the game was the Bowie High School with a score of seventy-six to nothing. The Decatur Team was a stout team."

Indiana Jones Has Long Since Died

I've been beaten down recently by ads for Harrison Ford's new movie Firewall. You know the drill, he has this concerned look on his face as he says something corny and then some explosion occurs. I used to think the guy was great, but ever since he uttered "Get off my plane!" in Air Force One, I've tuned out.

Wish I Could Find The Clip

There was a story on the news this morning of a baby found floating in a trash bag in Brazil. I can't remember if I was watching Good Morning America or the Today show, but one of the shows had the actual amateur videotape of a guy fishing the bag out of the lake and opening up to see this crying baby. It was one of the most amazing things I've ever seen. I'm looking for the video. Edit: I found a photo. Edit #2: And another.

As Most Struggle To Pay Gas And Heating Bills . . .

. . . "NEW YORK (Reuters) - Exxon Mobil Corp. the world's largest publicly traded oil company, on Monday reported a quarterly profit of $10.7 billion, capping a year of record earnings dominated by surging oil and gas prices."

Dakota Fanning

This 11 year old child actor normally beats me down, but her presentation to Shirley Temple tonight on the SAG Awards (yeah, I know you didn't see it - it was on TNT) was simply amazing. She may be the closest thing to Shirley Temple we've ever seen. Which reminds me, whatever happened to Haley Joel Osment of the Sixth Sense? (A great movie, by the way).

Printing Money

The NFL is printing money: "ESPN is paying $1.1 billion annually over eight years to broadcast the Monday night games. NBC has a six-year, $3.6 billion deal for the Sunday night package. CBS and Fox are paying a total of $8 billion over six years for the rights to Sunday afternoon games. DirecTV agreed to pay $3.5 billion for a five-year extension that runs through 2010." Throw in ticket sales, suite sales, licensing, and product sales and there is a ton of cash involved. With that much cash floating around, I'm not sure the players are being paid enough.
