Jon Stewart On Charleston

I haven't watched this yet, but I've never heard so much buzz about his opening monologue. He apparently decided to go comedy free.

Too bad he's not as passionate about addressing the Democratic Party policies that keep blacks mired in poverty and illegitimacy.

The fact that he believes that getting rid of law abiding peoples right to protect themselves will work is what is hard to understand.

The gun free zone is what allowed those people to be killed. The fact that the gunman new that no one would be there to stop him is why he chose that location.

And this constant narrative that the Civil War was over slavery is sad and intellectually dishonest. The North got to write the history when they won so they can say it was about whatever they want. The truth is in the fat that the Emancipation Proclamation did not free the slaves in the North. What else needs to be said. Until liberals learn to see the truth and get away from their desire for a Utopian society, they will never solve these problems.

The only way to stop a bad man with a gun is by a good man with a gun. The Federal government wants to disarm all the good people so they can be in total control of our lives with no chance of refusal.

Wake up liberals before it is too late.

Regardless of how you feel about Jon Stewart, he raises questions and issues here that, sadly, will continue to go unresolved. It's mind boggling that, as a country, we refuse to have productive discussions on this subject. And by "this subject," I don't mean gun control, per se. It's not about whether people have a right to own guns, it's about coming up with solutions on how to reduce the number of injuries & deaths caused by guns. It's all incredibly complicated and involves access to guns, mental-health and capacity issues, gang/criminal activity, racism, fear, and so much more.

But we're not even willing to discuss it. One side says "we need to get rid of guns," and the other side says "you'll pry it from my cold, dead hands." So we ignore the nuance, pretend like it's an unsolvable problem, and shake our heads as people continue to die.

It's shameful.

Anonymous said...

9:16 - Very well said. People refuse to address the fact that its not simply black or white, right or wrong, it is very, very complicated. But addressing that would require real thought, something that most people are unwilling to do in this day and age.

Gun laws wouldn't have prevented this tragedy. The gun was obtained legally and it appears given to the son illegally. The father should be charged as well.

If anyone out there has a goofy, malnourished child who plays video games and hides in his room, please don't give him a gun. This kid had warning signs everywhere and the father should have known better.

We have to be better about policing ourselves to prevent these things from happening. If you have a friend or relative acting strange, spewing hate and scaring folks you need to step in and have the guns removed. I don't care if it ruins your relationship it is better than the alternative.

Anonymous said...

Strange, because when politicians become comedians, they aren't funny, either.

wordkyle said...

916 - Look at your own argument. "One side says "we need to get rid of guns," and the other side says "you'll pry it from my cold, dead hands." While that's a vast oversimplification, it points out that Liberals are inclined to remove a constitutional right, while the Conservatives are inclined to defend it, with no attempt at a non-political solution. As I said elsewhere, a serious attempt to control gun violence would examine the subcultures that are mostly responsible for that violence.

The majority of gun-related deaths are suicides.
A huge percentage of non-suicide gun-related deaths, especially among young males, are gang-related.

Let's begin the search for a solution with the assumption that these two groups need to be addressed and challenged. Not mentally healthy, responsible gun owners.

Anonymous said...

It upsets me how liberals call this a terrorist attack (which it is) but refuse to say the same thing about the Ft. Hood shooter.

Anonymous said...

Comedy free? So about normal.

Anonymous said...

It is sad, but the mentally healthy, responsible gun owners, are most likely the only group with guns that would listen to a law to give them up.

Anonymous said...

Stage 1 thinking defined. The terrorist that john stewart says are nothing are going to attack us again. We can replay this after the attack and it will seem as pathetic as the "summer of the shark" headlines prior to 9/11.

The first commentator today has no clue how stupid he/she is.

This shooting wasn't about poverty of black people -- it is about the depravity of white people. One of you walked into a place of worship of your God and shot 9 innocent people dead. Wake up. You created that monster. Every time you called the President of the United States "Obammy" or let someone else do it without calling them on it, you helped create an environment that allows one of you to think that a person with black skin is less than a person.

A child is not born hating others. He was taught that. He probably learned most of it on this stupid internet where people like you have no respect for the President of the United States or those who don't look and think like you.

Take some responsibility for this environment that you have created. At a time when the Republicans have controlled the Senate and the House and most state houses across the country, our fellow citizens have gone on a rampage against each other. Instead of waking up and realizing that you have created this environment, you simply shrug your shoulders and walk away. Or shout at the top of your lungs, "Don't take my guns."

We have spent trillions of dollars --- as Jon Stewart rightly said --- fighting against ISIS and other militants but refuse to acknowledge that young white men shoot up schools in Columbine and Sandy Hook, theatres in Colorado and now churches in South Carolina. Not to mention blowing up federal buildings in Oklahoma. But you are content in doing nothing about that problem.

So sad, weak and irresponsible.

Bear, you can argue what are the historical truths and origins of the Civil War till the cows come home. To me, it is all about results & outcomes. The North won and slavery went away. If the South had won, can you argue that slavery would have eventually disappeared, left to individual state decisions? If it had withered away, would it have been replaced by a modern day South Africa style apartheid, since blacks were judged to be lesser individuals or non-humans? I know it is a tired old analogy, but I'll make it again. The National Socialist Party of 1936 Germany wore snappy uniforms, reinvigorated national pride, and pulled a nation out of an economic free-fall, but at the end of the day, they instigated and signed off on the murder of millions who they judged lesser beings. Men, women, babies, the handicapped, the infirm, etc. I judge them by the outcomes. I don't give a rat's patootie why they did it or what their reasoning/justification was, it all about the results of that action they took.

Yea, we all need to be armed. That'll make us safer. I am contacting my legislator in that spirit requesting a bill be introduced that will issue a free Glock 19 with a thousand rounds of ammunition (also free) to every black male & female between the ages of 18 and 25. That way, they can insure their own self protection. You think the NRA will get on board with that idea? I think I see some middle aged white guys starting to sweat a little.

“And if we accept that a mother can kill even her own child, how can we tell other people not to kill one another? How do we persuade a woman not to have an abortion? As always, we must persuade her with love and we remind ourselves that love means to be willing to give until it hurts. Jesus gave even His life to love us. So, the mother who is thinking of abortion, should be helped to love, that is, to give until it hurts her plans, or her free time, to respect the life of her child. The father of that child, whoever he is, must also give until it hurts.”

9:54 -

But that's the problem - we won't search for a solution. Dems won't do it because of the potential for dealing with race, and the GOP won't do it because of the money they get from the NRA.

So, as usual with so many other issues, politicians will bloviate all day long and never do anything, because their primary goals are getting re-elected and raising money.

Meanwhile, real people get injured and die. From suicides and homicides and gang violence and mass shootings and gun-related accidents and on and on and on...

Our leaders spend all day navel gazing while the people they're supposed to be serving pay the price. The whole system is f*cked and we the sheeple just turn on the next Kardashian show.

Racism will not go away as long as we allow it to exist. We allow one racial group to be openly racist. We cannot hope to become color blind as long as we continue that practice. The only way to make it go away is to say we do not do that, period.

My guess is BG was quiet about the death penalty here because he wants it in this case, he just won't admit it publicly.

This isn't about guns. It's about how we see one another.
Until we stop being children and accept the fact that we are all on this rock together and we either coexist as brothers, or we all die as fools will this idiocy stop.

Anonymous said...

He may well have been correct to go joke free out of respect; nonetheless, I didn't hear any solutions posited in his self-absorbed musing, so what does he think differentiates him from any other hand-wringer, irrespective of political persuasion? That he supposedly 'cares more' than the average bear?

Why should that impress?

Anonymous said...

People are sheep. They believe what they are told. Has anyone seen the dead bodies? The blood? It could easily be just another staged incident to further the impetus of a government gun grab. Obama was so quick to jump in and make his comments on guns, racism, yadda yadda yadda. The pundits crawl out of the woodwork, Jon Stewart included, and the racism argument is renewed along with guns, white maleism and inherent hatred.

How can the general public be so gullible? Everybody involved gets paid off to keep their mouths shut -- it's the American way.

I know most of you blanch at such a suggestion but give it a little thought and everything will come into focus. These staged actions are coming hot and heavy now -- examples of just how much our society and media is controlled by the major players.

Anonymous said...

9:16 is probably one of the best comments that I have read on this blog.

The goal is bipartisan: reducing the amount of injuries and deaths caused by guns.

But because everyone is so stubbornly partisan, no progress is made toward that goal. Party bias on both sides entrenches lawmakers and pundits into a win-loss mentality, when in reality, it is much more complicated. Wordkyle and the other Anonymous'es who spun 9:16 into their anti-liberal or anti-conservative agenda completely missed the point.

Well said, 9:16.

"This shooting wasn't about poverty of black people -- it is about the depravity of white people."

That's very "blame it on the white man" of you. But it would have been more correct to say it is about the depravity of people. Otherwise, you cannot defend the murder of black people against other black people (or black people against white people) one or two at a time, or am I supposed to feel guilty about all that, too?

Obammy!

DF Lester Maddox,

As a percentage of the population, slavery was on the decline nationwide from 1790 through 1860 (US Census Data). So yest, it would have eventually ended as it did in the rest of the world.

How can you even consider apartheid when that was a white minority ruling a black majority. Blacks have never been more than roughly 17% of the population.

And your Nazi reference is just plain stupid. Liberals try to relate everything conservative to Nazis.

Can you say that strong states governments could not be better than a strong national government? Seems local control is always more efficient and better suited than a distant out of touch national control.

Stewart suggests that the shooting was caused - at least in part - by streets named for Confederate generals? Seriously?

A quick Google search reveals that there are now approximately 650 U.S. cities with streets named for MLK, including - wait for it - Charleston and Greenville (perhaps others in SC, as well).

South Carolina is not one of the 11 states that doesn't have a MLK street/boulevard.

He may be considered a clever comedian by the uncritical, but tackling serious issues isn't Stewart's forte.

Anonymous said...

2:44 -

I think you missed the point. Stewart isn't saying the streets' names CAUSED the shooting. Rather, he's making a point that some people try to pretend that racism is dead or is just a benign artifact of history, when clearly it is not.

If Obammy had a son....

I'll never understand why there was no outrage when a black thug shot a white infant in the face as he sat in it's stroller because the mom wouldn't give the thug her purse, or recently when a black thug viciously murdered 4 well to do white people in their home and then set it on fire. Did Obammy go on TV to denounce them?

Anonymous said...

10:25 - I wish you had responded to the actual point of the first "commentator" --- that Democratic Party policies contribute to the poverty and illegitimacy of blacks. Am I correct to assume you disagree?

I would also appreciate your insight into other presidential nicknames. Since use of the name "Obammy" helps "create an environment that allows one of you [LL readers? white people? men? women? humans?] to think that a person with black skin is less than a person," what harm did use of the names "Dubya," "Bushie," or "Slick Willie" cause?

And I have to ask... If the internet is so "stupid," what are you doing here? Do you believe your contributions are making the internet more or less stupid?

Anonymous said...

2:19 -- that's just the kind of response I expected. I know it's difficult to break your hypnotic state, but try to at least entertain the notion. Free yourself from media programming.

Why do we never see the disturbing blood and guts? Why do we never see the proof of what we're being asked to believe? It's a weakness of news reporting that is being exploited.

Your mind is not your own. Think for yourself.

Racism is nothing but a took used by the forces of politics. The rest is just a stage play. Is it real or is it Memorex?

4:29 - You can't reason people out of positions that they were never reasoned into.

wordkyle said...

155 - You missed my point. I basically agreed with 916. The only "solution" to gun-related violence proposed in the national conversation is "take away guns/don't take away guns" with, as I said, no attempt at a non-political solution. It's as though we're discussing how to prevent the spread of the common cold by only arguing "force everyone to take Vitamin C/don't force everyone to take Vitamin C" when the real solution is for people to wash their hands more often.

Real solutions are not what politicians want. As long as the dominant theme is around gun control, there will be a battle that only goes around in circles. Discussing root causes makes politicians uncomfortable, because it may not be popular politically. Statistically, these high-profile shootings are insignificant, but they always start the same circular arguments all over again.
