Good Grief

Remind me again how more attention being paid to mental-health issues and fewer guns in circulation is a bad thing?

Remember, suicides are mostly ignored by media. This happens all the time--

Three rapes were stopped last night by women protecting themselves with guns.

I'm just glad we have childproof medicine bottles or this young man would've used aspirin to kill himself instead. A much slower death.

because it accomplishes nothing.

passing laws to make yourself feel better just ads another layer to the fail that is the U.S. Government

You don't hear about all the crimes that are stopped by the use of guns. If the media covered those stories with the attention they give the others, the general public would see how gun control will not work. But then, that would go against their liberal agenda.

People don't necessarily kill themselves to end their life, they do it to end the pain.

Anonymous said...

The pain is temporary the life is permanent.

@11:32: Yes they do, and some also want to inflict pain on the ones that love them on their way out.

Took one out of the Gene Pool, awesome.

10:32...Because if you had an ounce of common sense you would quickly realize how this will play out in the real world. If you think people with a mental illness were reluctant to seek help or disclose that illness before, just wait. Also, it is not the amount of guns in circulation, but who has access to them. Career criminals usually do not obtain guns through background checks, they steal them or buy them illegally. With more attention being paid to the mentally ill, it will ulitimately lead to a larger black market for illegally traded/obtained guns. That means more home invasions, more gun store robberies, and guns and high capacity magazines manufactured by small machine shops. There is going to be an even larger black market for ammunition.

What you libs get about the war on drugs you cannot seem to understand about gun control. I am not here trying to bash you, just think this through. If you libs would allow us to keep the mentally ill locked away as well as career criminals then we would have a workable solution. Funny that defective guns rarely make it past outgoing inspection at any gun manufacturer, but we release defective humans into society every day.

This reminds me of the bumper sticker..."Don't shoot your classmates, shoot yourself."

1:46, "We release defective humans into society every day."

Are you suggesting that there are humans who are not defective? (Aside from yourself, of course.)

Anonymous said...

4:31...Defective enough to take another humans life in pursuit of crime, fantasy, excitement, jealousy or any other reason outside of self-defense.

And yes, I am highly defective myself, just not in ways that are generally harmful to the public. I sometimes pee sideways, I have a toothy grin, my cheeks do not have a pinkish hue, everytime I see the word "juxtapose" I think of something I am "just supposed" to do, I cannot do Algebra, I love menudo (the band too), and last but not least I comment on this blog.

Maybe the reason there is not a lot of publicity about how guns prevented crimes is that it seldom happens. Just like the "3 rapes that were stopped last night" by women with guns - without any documentation of this "fact". It's hard to prove a negative but we know there were over 250,000 gun deaths in the last 10 years while there were 6,500 US military deaths in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.

I believe that there are far too many guns too readily available to too many mentally disturbed people and criminals. This is a problem that is much greater in the USA than in any other developed nation. Why can't we try to fix it?

1:45 Agree somewhat but you and conservs can't have it both ways lock em all up but cut budgets for all health services especially mental health and bitch about cost of keeping criminals locked away. Better have a big check book cause whether you like it or not your idea is gonna cost.

You want stats? Research the cities with the highest rate of violent gun crimes vs the cities with the strictest gun control. Might find a bit of a shocker...

I agree with you. If these libs would pull their head out of the sand & look around, they would see the gene pool is very weak. I worked in public education for over 20 years & some people should not breed. Heck, you don't have to work at school to see that's, just go to Walmart. I can't stand to go to Walmart. There are so many nasty, tattooed, fat disgusting illiterate people there. I grew up in Wise County & love it here, but I go to Southlake to shop.

Sometimes you just can't fix people who want to die. My spouse committed suicide many years ago, not for one minute did I think it was my fault. Yes, I was sad he did it, but it was his choice. Thank goodness he didn't take me, the kids or anyone else with him. I know this was a child that committed suicide, but chances are he was never going to be okay. No it wasn't the guns fault, if he was going to kill himself,he could have done it in many different ways.

Dems hate guns, Repubs hate middle class. We need a new party.

5:05, thank you for clarifying. I'm still somewhat troubled by your earlier post. While I'm not sure I disagree with you, it sounds like you might be oversimplifying the issue of "mental illness." Determining which mental illnesses warrant being "locked up" and which ones don't is a debate that's been going on for a very long time. There simply isn't an easy answer.

10:55, No problem, but I will clarify further for you on mental illness so your still not troubled by my post. Mental illness is a very difficult subject for anyone to wrap their head around and I do not think there are easy answers. I would not lock them all up.

Many folks with mental illness are productive citizens and are no worry to public safety. I am talking about the folks who have a clear history of violence, lack of self control, and extreme behavior. Sending them to Wichita for a few months and loading them up on drug cocktails distributed by the Dr.'s at the low end of the talent pool is not the answer.
