The NFL took the bounty program run for three seasons in New Orleans seriously.
And the Saints franchise will pay dearly.
Gregg Williams, the defensive coordinator who masterminded the operation, has been suspended indefinitely by the NFL. He can apply for reinstatement after one year. That means the St. Louis Rams will need a new coordinator this season.
The Saints are reeling. Sean Payton, the head coach, has been suspended for the entire season. Mickey Loomis, the general manager, has been suspended for eight games. The Saints will lose their second-round draft pick this year and in 2013. The club has been fined $500,000. Additionally, linebackers coach Joe Vitt, who is also an assistant head coach, has been suspended for six games.
More.

* Spelling corrected. Sheesh, did you know he makes $10 million a year with an increase to $20 million by 2019?

Roger Goodall, who is that Jane's brother!
So if you can blatantly cheat your way to multiple superbowls (Patriots) you get
Coach fined 500k
Team fined 250k
Loss of a 1st round draft pick
If you have a bounty on certain players (Saints) you get
Head coach suspended for 1 year
Defensive cordinator suspended indefinitely
Assist. coach suspended 6 games
Team fined 500k
Loss of 2 - 2nd round picks
WTF !
WHO DAT!?
Ohhhh....The commish!
I don't know who Roger Goodall is, but I know who Roger Goodell is!
The Saints season is pretty much already over before it has begun. I hope Williams is never reinstated. I know it is a different sport but this is way worse than Pete Rose betting on baseball.
permanent suspension for all.
i would be filing lawsuits if i was bret favre
You may want to wait until the appeals process runs its course before we get all excited about who is suspended for how long.
Just goes to show where professional sports has been going for the past years. Players hired "from the 'hood" who act like they're still "from the 'hood" and coaches and owners willing to overlook almost ANY behavior as long as the "playuhs" make 'em some moolah! Now the coaches and owners are acting like THEY"RE "from the 'hood"! We've gone from "rooting for jerseys" according to Seinfeld, to rooting for disgusting jerseys. I've gotten to where I watch almost ZERO pro sports nowadays, especially football and basketball.
Yeah I agree 2:05, the Roger Goodell led NFL has a clear track record of backing away from decisions on suspensions and fines (extra sacrastic tone)!!!
Would there be a way to get Jerry Jones implicated in this? If we could get him suspended, the Cowboys might be able to rebuild their roster.

"I've gotten to where I watch almost ZERO pro sports nowadays, especially football and basketball." - Because you're a racist prick? Good.
This bounty thing as been going on since the American football came about. Hell they do it in most every other sport.
However, these people got caught making it organized instead of a player-to-player betting game.
Too bad they had to be an example. C'est la vie!
Wow.... that will teach you to put razor blades in Halloween candy and pushing old ladies down.
Please tell me what defensive player doesn't get paid, whether in big salaries, bonuses, or promotions....for knocking people out of ball games? With intent. Please tell me where I can find a sideline on gameday on which I won't hear a coach tell a player "knock that SOB out of this effin game, it's what we're paying you to do"...etc. etc.
Implies that you played pro football.
O Rly?
Defensive players get paid to tackle other players, not knock them out of the game. That's why spearing, clipping, horsecollar tackles, etc., are illegal. Injuries are a part of the game. Intentionally injuring a guy - or trying to - is unsportsmanlike
it's possible Goodell handed out severe penalties figuring that they might get reduced on appeal
Shocked! I'm shocked, shocked to find that this behavior is going on in here!
DF Captain Renault
I didn't care for Gregg Williams when he was on the ticket.
niggers who cares
If all the other "good" coaches in the NFL could get suspended for the season, the Cowboys might have a chance at success! Maybe...

There is no appeal process for coaches or owners. Goodell is acting on the fact that there is a class action suit against the NFL from players who suffered head injuries. This is a gesture to the courts that the NFL is on top of player safety. Suspension of players has not been announced yet but some heads will roll here also. Players have a union for protection but not coaches, that part is a done deal.
Who cares?!?!? You people are more concerned about this crap than the current state of our country or taking care of your families. Wake up!
Hey 7:19....
:)
Next we will be fineing Chuck Lydell for knocking out his opponent (pick one). He should take it easy on them. (I may be out of date, but you get the meaning). Sports are tough. You have to be tough to make millions playing them.
Hey 2:16:
The only player named so far, Jonathan Vilma, is white, isn't he?
Not for sure...
