Bluebonnet Murder

Joe Duty Photo From 2003

The Messenger is reporting that the bluebonnets at Oaklawn Cemetery have been mowed down over the last 24 hours after the flowers' (along with some weeds, as well) execution was authorized by the cemetery's board. I'm guessing one of the reasons the Mess is jumping on the story is because the following blog was posted by them three days ago:

If the only thing that is left is a bag of Skittles and a hoodie, I'm gonna freak out.

Isn't that illegal?

That is extremely disappointing. Does the Board realize that people (family of those gone) have spent hours out there planting or cultivating those bluebonnets for their ancestor's grave? To destroy them before they have had the time to go to seed will completely wipe them out for years to come.
My family has donated to the cemetery fund for years, but this decision will cause me strong consideration before making out another check.
Very very disappointed in such an arbitrary, uncalled for decision!!

Didn't someone complain and that's why they cut them down?

Guess they never heard of weed killer.

Why would the cemetary board ok the mowing of the State Flower? Sue Jean Cocanougher was on the board and planted many a blue bonnet seed at Oaklawn. The board needs to get out there and replant the beauty they just oked to be destroyed. What the heck were they thinking?

That "reseed" comment is funny !

It is not illegal to pick, mow, throw, plow, step on or eat, ect... the state flower in Texas, unless it is on official Texas State Park property

Some people have always griped about the Bluebonnets at Oaklawn, because the weeds were left for awhile so the Bluebonnets could seed. In the past those people have been ignored and the results have been beautiful Bluebonnets to enjoy over and over again. Someone took it upon themselves to play BOSS and made a terrible decision...very sad...

Who is "the Board" anyway?? Is it a private group (and is OLC private land??) or is it owned by the City?
