Random Wednesday Morning Thoughts

  • The media got up in arms yesterday about the "found" audio from 2008 of Rick Santorum saying that America was under attack by Satan. Statements like that don't even raise an eyebrow around here, do they?
  • The First Baptist Church of Decatur is charging $18  for a Christian concert on March 2nd?
  • When I was a kid, a fire and brimestone evangelist wanted to sell his albums in the foyer of the First Baptist Church of Bridgeport during a revival. He even had the tables set up with his products before the evening service. After the deacons of the church told him that wasn't allowed (that money-changers in the temple story does have a meaning, you know), I'm pretty sure he got angry and in the middle of the service told those in the congregation just to "take them" because it wasn't about the money.
  • It was probably about the money.
  • There was a highly touted Bill Clinton documentary on PBS last night. I was able to watch most of if (in between kids, wife, and a Glee interruption), and it was fantastic. Why would any institution trust Kenneth's Starr's judgment by hiring him?
  • One thing I forgot to mention after watching The Voice the other night: I want to replace the Family Cat with Cee Lo's cat.
  • After I went on my rant about Public Notices and their cost in the local paper, I decided to look at them today. I had Failed Smile when I noticed one was purchased by Smith and Green, P.C.  Win the battle, lose the war.
  • The chances of the defendant in the the Parker County Torture Case being given life in prison by the jury? About 100%.
  • Man, everyone dogged me yesterday for my methamphetamine "with a taser chaser" line. Comedic value? Anyone?
  • If  I remember correctly, the dad of the Frisco-maybe-kidnapped-teen said after her return that the event was a "personal matter". If she was making that story up, I bet he's smart enough to keep it "in house".  If so, this news story will die over the next 48 hours.
  • But Fox 4 dropped a stunner last night: They admitted they had mistakenly reported that the Frisco teen claimed she had been sexually assaulted two days ago. That's a serious "oops."
  • Maybe that Frisco story has my skeptical radar on high alert because the news story about the guy who allegedly destroyed an antique store in Saginaw yesterday afternoon with fire and then fled sounds a little fishy. Fox 4 called the story "bizarre" and "crazy".
  • One more Fox 4 note:   Having Clarice Tinsley read Facebook responses after each segment is a beating.
  • Abilene Wylie knocked out the Decatur Lady Eagles last night in the basketball playoffs. I'm not sure any school has more playoff victories in all sports than Abilene Wylie over Decatur.
  • Some kid from Ector made a full court shot against Slidell last night. Anyone got a video?
  • There was a  DWI arrest in Wise County a couple of months back where the blood alcohol content was .42.  I've been doing DWI defense a long time, and I've never seen anything like that.
  • That mysterious Zombie Convention actually advertised in the Messenger this week after I gave them a ton of free press here. Their ad is on page 7 under the Sudoku puzzles.
  • Not sure why Highland Park's leading basketball scorer's DWI arrest over the weekend made so much news.
  • Lent begins today. Saw a Facebook post of some girl who was going to get drunk last night before she gave up alcohol for Lent. Interesting theology.

Forgot how much I disliked Kenneth Starr and Newt Gingrich until I watched PBS last night on Bill Clinton! And to think what they would have done to Pres. Kennedy???

Be careful getting Cee Lo's cat. Cee Lo is an alias, and he deals harshly with those who make him angry or upset the cat.

FBC Decatur charged $25 for the recent Tim Hawkins comedy routine--so what? FBC Decatur isn't making money on these concerts, but the performers DO need to get paid in order for them to come, anad FBC Decatur has expenses in bringing in these performers. These music performers coming in March are no different. Part of the reason why FBC Decatur built such a big auditorium in the past was to be able to offer concerts such as these as a ministry to our local citizens. Absolutely no issue here.

Sounds to me as if this Bill Clinton documentary had a pro-Clinton bias.

Let me repeat something I've said many many times....it wasn't about the sex....it was about the PERJURY!

If the president of the United States has no respect for the law, then why should the rest of us?

As to the moneychangers issue, the Temple at the time of Jesus had the following areas of worship: (1) the Holy of Holies--priest (one) only once a year allowed in; (2) an area next to (1) where priests only were allowed; (3) the Court of the Jews/Hebrews where Jewish men were allowed; (4) the Court of the Women where Jewish women were allowed; and (5) the Court of the Gentiles where the Gentiles were allowed. These go from innermost to outermost. The moneychangers had set up "shop" in the Court of the Gentiles, and had totally turned it into a loud, noisy marketplace (not to mention that they were being unfair in money exchanging practices), thereby totally destroying the Gentile Court as a place of worship. Jesus "whupped up" on them because this area was to be a place of worship for the Gentiles, and it was being abused, and neglected for worship.

Performers/revivalists selling items out in the the foyer area of a church are not the same thing, and has long been a non-issue in churches of most denominations for quite a LONG time. Now if it was interfering with worship and being done in a disrespectful manner, that would be something different. Your "memory" is probably an "old" one! :-)

Santorum's comment scares me. Seems like he is the type who would delight in identifying and purging the non-elect.

You do realize the Arkansas Bar Association disbarred Clinton from practicing law because he lied under oath?

It's nice to know that at least a few lawyers out there don't make exceptions for attorneys who don't respect the law, regardless of how much they may agree with his personal politics.

Would Jesus charge $18 for someone wanting to attend one of his activities? I stopped in at FBC once trying to donate frozen turkeys so they could help the needy. They had no such program so I took them to WARM. Churches have turned into social clubs and have no time for helping the needy. That club on SH 114 in Paradise even has Superbowl Sunday.

9:24--I call complete BS. The folks who ran the temple in those days would only accept certain types of currency as offerings. This official temple money was not in wide circulation and was generally available only from the "moneychangers" who had set up shop at the temple with the consent (and after greasing the palms) of the temple officials. The exchange rates charged were exorbitant with the profits being shared by the changers and church officials alike. The templegoers who were being victimized by this scam had no choice but to pay the inflated rates because--according to the priests--they had to feed the payphone if they wanted to get on the line to the big man upstairs. When JHC was confronted with this situation he went into a rage and threw all of these early Pat Robertsons and Bob Tiltons out on their collective asses. (And then they rode those asses away.)

To paraphrase that notorious Catholic, John Kennedy: There are the real issues which should decide this campaign. And they are not religious issues. The real issues have been obscured, perhaps deliberately, in some less responsible quarters.

Gallup reports the unemployment rate for mid-February was 9.0%. Their methods mirror the BLS, so the "official" unemployment figure for February will be movin' on up. Unemployment, the economy, government spending -- no wonder Liberals and the media want us talking about selling albums in churches.

The whole debate about religion, contraception, etc. focuses on the wrong point. Why didn't this public debate happen before Democrats rammed through Obamacare? Now, the White House gets to decide if the contraception rule is included or not. Obamacare can include or do whatever the White House wants. Pelosi meant it when she said Democrats had to pass Obamacare so the rest of us can find out what's in it. Surprise!

Oh no say it isn't so, a church that makes people WANT to attend? Maybe you should give it try before you judge. Oh and that "club" sent out hundreds of meals to feed families at Thanksgiving.

To paraphrase that notorious Catholic, John Kennedy: There are the real issues which should decide this campaign. And they are not religious issues. The real issues have been obscured, perhaps deliberately, in some less responsible quarters.

You are absolutely right.

However...

To paraphrase the average Republican: Obama is a secret Muslim! Barack HUSSEIN Obama! Abortion is evil and liberals will go to HELL! This is a CHRISTIAN country! We should be able to pray at public events! The Catholic Church shouldn't have to provide contraceptives! My tax dollars shouldn't go to pay for abortion, it's a sin!

Any of this sounding familiar?

Sadly, you will pretend like religion is only an issue for the left, and act like your party isn't the one bringing it on themselves.

No Rage, he wasn't. He was too busy being the spiritual shepherd/mentor to Obama.

Anonymous said...

And Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell were any better?

At least Wright was right about his sermons, although they were hyperbole-ridden. Robertson said God spoke to him and was going to kill him if he didn't make a million bucks that day! Falwell wanted us to wage war on every Muslim in the name of the Lord! You complain about being in four African Countries--we'd be in 50 if it was up to him.

Rage

9:43, I'm sure your heart was in the right place when you took frozen turkeys to FBC to give to the needy. I don't attend that church, but I belong tro one that supports WARM as a way of organized giving. Our youth do a lot also, but there has to be some organization to it. You can't just go out and hand out turkeys. Thanks for giving to WARM, a nondenominational group that has many of the churches working together. For helping out the needy, thought, you just can't beat the Methodist church here.

Anonymous said...

To paraphrase the average weenie:Obammy is the smartest man ever elected President! The murder of innocent babies is perfectly OK and evil Republicans will go to HELL! This is a secular country and we should be able to do whatever we want! The Catholic church should, no wait. That will lose the Catholic vote. The insurance companies should provide contraception free of charge which will force them out of business leaving everyone no choice but to have Obammycare. My tax dollars should be used to committ murder, it's not a sin.

Anonymous said...

Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell were personal up close pastors to which president again?

3:30, that's an accurate summary of the Constitutional rulings on the issues. Thanks.

Rage

Anonymous said...

9:43, why did you think that if you brought turkeys to a church, they would give them out? Do they even have a place to store the turkeys before the things went bad?

That is as crazy as bringing potatoes to a school & expecting them to feed the poor kids. My mom remembers bringing a turnip or potato to school during the depression so that the school could make a vegetable stew each day, but this is 2012.

Anonymous said...

Robertson ran for president, dipshit.

I usually keep up with the news but I must have missed where there was a constitutional ruling on Obammy being the smartest President ever and a ruling on the mandate by a President to force a business to give it's products away for free. Thanks for informing me, Rage.

You guys are making the most beautiful point about why need to see some atheistic Presidential nominees.

wordkyle said...

Pay attention the first part of March. The Liberal and media noise about religion and contraceptives will ratchet up quite a bit to drown out the news of February's 9.0% unemployment rate.

By the way, now Obama is talking about cutting corporate tax rates? Proving what I've said before -- Democrats have to run as Conservatives to get elected. (Again, pay attention over the coming months to see how much Obama begins to sound like a Tea Partier.)

Anonymous said...

I can speak freely of the club on 114 in Paradise. The one that offers you cookies and coffee as you walk in the door? Yeah, that one. The one that has the youth program that teaches nothing of the gospel or the cross, but man those kids sure know how to shoot baskets! We went there for several months and never felt welcomed once by any member. It felt like a cattle call when you walked in the door, and a put on production as far as the services went. I'm sure they help many at Thanksgiving time. They should with all the money they collect every Sunday.

Bitter much 5:08??
Too each there own, but to say that the word of God is not being taught is a little far fetched. A little more traditional yes, not being taught at all no. Are you just mad because you didn't think of the cookies and coffee first? I don't think it says anywhere in the bible you can't do that and that you can't play basketball at church. There is a lot of word of God being taught in between all of the other stuff. Stick around, you'll be glad you did.

6:58, I do not have a "club" or even a "fellowship". Since churches helped my family so much in our economic struggles when I was a child I assummed that they still did that. When we were hungry, they came with food. When they saw us with holes in the soles of our shoes and wearing ragged clothes, they brought us shoes and clothing.

835 - I addressed your point of view in my comments on last Friday's post at 8:50 a.m. The media initiated and have relentlessly pursued the topic -- (seen any news headlines lately that include the word contraceptives?) -- now Republicans are forced to address it. And Obama's economy slides by unnoticed.

You must be joking. The middle east has had issues for thousands and thousands of years, even before there was a "West".

The current chapter is nothing more than the same song, 970th verse.
