Interesting When All That "Crazy Government Spending" Takes Place

The chart was created in April and President Obama's current percentage is actually up to 41%. However, that's on pace to tie W after eight years.

(And before you think Bush The First had a fairly low number, remember that he was a one term president.)

Source. (Thanks, Ben.)

Edit: Even with all the criticism, those numbers are fairly accurate.

i see all kinds of charts and graphs and hear all kind of stats and everyone on each side spew numbers and graphs and charts and i am sure it is all lies.
everything is skewed to 'their' advantage.
i'm pretty sure of one thing and that is we are so far in debt we will never recover. sad but true.
every one of us is to blame.

Am I going to have to give my High School Economics "you make a graph tell any story" lesson?

IS THAT A SPENDING INCREASE OR A DEBT INCREASE?

There will be those that argue with the numbers. I will add my thanks to Ben.

"percent increase of public debt" is completely misleading -- BHWB and Obama get off easy precisely because their respective predecessors had such a large raw-dollar increase, and because they had a shorter time to screw it up.

Rough dollar increases:

Carter: 280 Billion (4 years)
Reagan: 1.7 Trillion (8 years)
GHWB: 1.5 Trillion (4 years)
Clinton: 1.5 Trillion (8 years)
GWB: 5 Trillion (8 years)
Obama: 4.4 Trillion (3 years)

Aw now, why deal with actual facts when FOX News has such more entertaining blabber?
BTW - it was also Reagan who passed the largest tax increase as well (doubling the FICA tax on employees and employers that you workers are still paying). Still waiting for Wordy to 'splain away this chart.

Detailed dissection of this chart. And the source of the chart seems to be our good friend Nancy Pelosi, not the link provided.

What complete and total BS.

First, it shows that percentage increases are meaningless. An increase from 1 to 2 demonstrates a 100% increase.

Second, shall we look at the actual amounts. In three years, Obama has amassed over $5 Trillion in debt. That's more than ALL of the first 42 Presidents combined!

When G.W. left the White House in January 2009, the annual deficit was $170 Billion, a number that is admittedly too high, but only 1.1% of GDP. Obama's 2011 budget is projected to be over 10% of the US GDP for 2011!

Please don't go confusing people with facts. If they say they are a Republican conservative and they are running up the debt its okay. If they are a Democrat and running up the debt, they are ruining the country.

You _ss wipes can complain all you want but the next president will be the same one we have now.You would think all you smart ( REPUBLICANS ) could fine somebody to run for president that dont look like a freaking idiot. They are making Obama shine.

All debt and spending is Bush's fault.

Propaganda. Nothing to see here. Move along.

Do not look at Percentages. Barry, you should know this.

Look at the total $$$ amount attributed to that President. THAT is what you need to be alarmed by.

I think you need to offer up a correction/moderation of your post. Its the "disagreebly right thing" for you to do.

As I've mentioned many times previously in these comments, Conservatives have heavily criticized Republican presidents (and Congresses) for their spending. That was one of the reasons for the Democrats taking back control of Congress in 2006 - Conservatives punished Republicans by staying home. Even Reagan said later that the increase in the debt was the greatest disappointment of his presidency.

facts and figures don't mean shit to the pubs on here.
These are the same folks that know Bush created the recession but blame Obama. They know that Obama killed Bin Laden but give Bush the credit. You are butting a stone wall when you deal with these bozos.

Tell me how you want the chart to look and I'll make sure the numbers get it to look that way.

Double Fake Mr. Stats

Yeah, it must be nice to be a president who DOESN'T have to govern in response to a nuclear threat, or when Iraq invades Kuwait and starts firing scuds on Israel, or a massive terrorist attack, etc. Much easier to avoid running up a tab when your biggest concern is whether or not anyone sees the intern on her knees under your desk.

I think we should change to a live chicken monetary standard. Making change will be messy, though. And I don't know what the exchange rate would be for a Dominique to a Rhode Island Red.

I used this graph in my math class today. We are learning how to read graphs and how they can be misleading.

But how many of these presidents had to deal with the opposing political party being in charge of Congress?

I guarantee you that Clinton's would be much higher (and GW Bush's much lower) if they'd had divided government while they were in charge.

Spending always goes up when the same party controls the White House and Congress.

I'm with you, Darryl; live chickens would be way better than the mud pie idea I had last week.

The stats are incorrect.

There's nothing wrong with killing OBL (it WAS awesome). The only problem was it was years too late.

We spent about a trillion dollars trying to kill a faggot that just simply didn't matter anymore.

Based on the available intel. A President would have had to intentionally been trying to drop the ball to fumble OBL's demise.

Is it just me or did you miss the fact a percentage of increase on a chart like this is nearly meaningless and absolutely misleading?
It literally proves the adage, you can make a statistic mean whatever you want it to mean!

Anonymous said...

Wow...
Nobody likes to double-check anything anymore I'm SURE it was an innocent mistake. How can GWB's increase from $5.7B to $10.7B equal 118%?!?!? GWB's percentage appears to include BHO's first year in office. WHOOOPS!! GWB's percentage is actually 89%, which is well below where BHO is on pace to finish.

The numbers aren't dead on. But, they are close enough to demonstrate a few things:
-Republicans love deficit spending
-Democrats love deficit spending
-Two wars are very expensive
-43 and Obama both felt the need for TARP/Bailouts
-Clinton benefitted from the emergence of the Internet

BG I have always liked the fact that while we disagree on virtually everything you are at least honest. Now you have proven the point that leftism makes good people do bad things. You are intentionally misleading people. Someone smart enough to graduate college, law school, and pass the bar should know how misleading that graph is. Continue to lie and propagandize and you will lose any credibility you hold. Shame on you.

From politifact: We find so much wrong with this chart that we don’t think it contains any significant approximation of the truth. It made a major calculation error that dramatically skewed the debt increase away from Obama and toward George W. Bush. It glossed over significant variations in time served in office. It cherry-picked the measurement that was favorable to its cause. And it is contradicted by statistics for GDP-adjusted debt, which show Obama to be the most, rather than the least, debt-creating president of the last five. None of this suggests that Obama can’t turn things around as the economy improves (and Democrats can also take some solace in the fact that Bill Clinton did remarkably well in all of our measurements). But in communicating which administrations contributed the most to growth of the debt, this chart is a failure.

From 16% to 41% in 8 months? I don't think we can afford another 4 years at that rate.

Our government borrows $1 dollar of every $3 we spend and if the top 1% paid everything they earned, we would not have money to cover what we spend. Obama is increasing spending more than any other president increasing our debt per year to over a trillion!

We cannot sustain the spending by borrowing. Everytime you buy something it costs more because our dollar is worth less.

Voters 30 and under support Ron Paul because he is the candidate speaking about debt!

Anonymous said...

Lots of comments on here against government debt made by people with significant personal debt that they couldn't pay if called to. Hypocrits.

All this proves is that liberals will always back and vote Democrat and conservatives will always back and vote for the best man for our country.

National Politics 101 (over simplistic but generally true) When a you have a Democrat president and congress they will crate new entitlement programs. They will raise taxes and strip money from law enforcement and defense programs to pay for them; but the deficit will still increase. When the Republicans come back into office they will cut taxes and try to restore spending on defense and law enforcement. The entitlement programs can never be cut, so the deficit goes up even more. When the Democrats come back into office the process repeats itself. This has been true, more or less, since the Carter administration.
