Oh, My!

Someone uploaded some photos on Flickr from the 1977 Texas State Fair -- most of them from the "Freak Show." Oh, how far we've come. Can you even imagine the firestorm that would occur if something like that happened today. (And it's barely been just 30 years.)
But one of my greatest childhood memories is going into that very same "Freak Show" with my mom (I still can't believe we did that) and a "lizard woman" came out. I think that was only the "sneak peek", you had to pay more to go back and the see the really weird stuff. No way we were going to do that! Or, more precisely, there was no way my dad was going to allow that.

Wow, we have come a long way. I'm glad we don't exploit those who are different for the sake of entertainment anymore; at least for the most part... No one should have to be forced to be part of a "freak show" as a source of income. Nonetheless, we still have a long way to go.

Just because "Bob" has no arms or legs, you think it would cause a firestorm today?

No mathematician I, I would nonetheless posit that 32-1/2 years solidly qualifies in the 30 year range, not "barely just".

Please pay a fine for superfluous use of modifiers.

Is that Eddie Murphy?

Loved the Freak Show! Yes, I am ashamed. State Fair of Texas was my yearly dose of sleazy fun.

No one should be forced to do something against their will. That being said, when the "normal" people decided freak shows were cruel they cut off the only means of income these people had. Most ended up unemployed and on govenment assistance. You know what they say the road to hell is paved with right?

Are we really done with freak shows though, what else would you call a show about a woman who's had an unusually large number of kids?

Not sure we've "come a long way". How do you know, 7:10, that he was forced to do this? Seems to me it's more admirable to use what you can to make an honest living than go on WELFARE, which is what people do today. i don't consider it progress at all to have more losers on government aid, no matter how they make their living.

What do you call a man with no arms and no legs lying in a pile of leaves?

Barry, there are still free freak shows around right here in Wise county. Just venture a little south to the Newark area and it'll just cost you the gas to get there.

Newark? Hell, just sit near the food entrance to Walmarts and freak on Bro.

His name isn't Bob because he isn't in the water. He is sitting on a table. His name is Tray.

The shows about 700 people and such are freak shows, too. We still have them, just not at the circus, and people still laugh and gawk.

To 9:19 - Perhaps in your worldview, but you are clearly placing economic means over human life, and everything you say will be tainted with this misconception until you build up your morals.
