The Generation Gap: In Comments

A comment I received about the officer-shooting-himself post from a couple of days ago. (Sorry, click to enlarge - but it's worth it.) To answer the confused youngster, I'll site Wikipedia about Barney Fife from the (great) Andy Griffith Show:
One major comedic source is Barney's lack of ability with a firearm. After numerous misfires (usually a Colt or Smith & Wesson M&P .38 caliber revolver), Sheriff Andy Taylor restricts Barney to carrying only a single bullet in his shirt pocket, "in case of an emergency."
Lordy, I feel old.

A particular peeve of mine is when I reference an old movie to a younger person (usually in their 20s or 30s) and they say "That was before my time." To which I reply, as sardonically as possible, "Movies are recorded, you know."

A particular peeve of mine is when I reference a new movie to an older person and they say "they don't make movies like they used to". To which I reply, as sardonically as possible, "you might want to see the movie before hating it or thinking the people who like it are stupid."

A particular peeve of mine is when people can't recognize a joke like the one bullet reference to something that in NO WAY involves them yet they still get very upset and yet do not ever bother to find out the joke reference for themselves before they make angry comments.

I met Barney Fife one night on I-10 in Mississippi. He had more than one bullet, but his gun was the shakiest.

I thought it was funny, Opie.

When I was younger, Decatur had it's very own Barney Fife, who almost arrested me one day for drinking a sprite in the pool hall.

8:31 -
Oh my gosh - I know exactly who you are talking about. I have not thought of that guy in ages!
Thinking of him gave me a really good laugh and I can't quit smiling now. (Wonder if anyone is noticing my silly smile in front of the computer?)

Did he dress like a policeman or a sheriff?

You know...that officer that was huffing and puffing with his arms crossed during a stare down contest at the civic center last weekend sort of looks like good ole Barney Fife.

I, too, remember the guy who thought he was a police officer. Can't remember his name, but he used to patrol the Reunion Grounds during the Reunion and stop at the cabin when I was a little kid and just make sure everything was ok. He was a bit "off" but harmless, my daddy assured me.

Thanks for the explanation. And for making me feel young! I didn't know the one bullet comment was a reference to Barney Fife or a joke. Just like many other things online that you come across that are different people's opinions. I was thinking that it was some idea that went around, but is not true just like the chain emails that are always going around and people believe them instead of using common sense, or even how some in Texas think that there is a law restricting how many times you can marry despite there being no such law in Texas. Though I did watch quite a bit of tv growing up, the Andy Griffeth Show was not one of my family's staples. Sorry to make you feel old Barry!

I remember that guy, his name was Ernest or Ernie

Wait 3:58, are you sure the name wasn't Edward, Ed, or Eddie?

Michael Everett?

YES, his name was Michael Everett!! Oh my gosh, I can't believe there are others who still remember that kook! (back in the late 60's) He dressed like a sherrif's deputy, badge (I think it was purchased at Ben Franklins on the square) and wore a holster that was empty. He also drove around in his car whilst impersonating an officer.
That guy was more than a "little" off, he was an out and out KOOK!
Anyone know what ever happened to him? Like, what institution is he housed in? lol!

Or was his name Mike Levritt? Something like that.
