Texas Tech Doesn't Like Injuns?

I saw this story this morning but thought it would go away. Now I'm not so sure. Some folks think Texas Tech was insensitive at best and racist at worst in producing this program for last week's game again the North Dakota Fighting Sioux. I'm more offended by the bad drawing of Coach Leach. (Then again, I miss Speedy Gonzalez.)

Give Me A Break!
Just another case of political correctness run amuck. Living in the U.S. affords people the right to freedom of speech, not the right to not be offended by freedom of speech. If memory serves me, according to history, Texans/Cowboys did indeed beat the stuffing, to near extinction, out of Indians/Native Americans.

If people are sooooo bloody offended about the image of Texans/Cowboys beating Indians/teams named for Native American tribes perhaps, those oh so sensitive people, PERSONALLY, need to do something to ACTUALLY improve the lives of Native Americans/minorities, other than hiss and spit about what someone else says about Native Americans/minorities.

jus' sayin'

I hope that the greatness that is Texas Tech U. won't let themselves get sucked into to politically incorrect/overly sensitive PW'd society that we are devolving into. That is a retro-looking program Mad magazine styly)and I am sure that no racism/offense was meant.

I don't get it. What is racist about that?

Oh puhleeze....you can find worse signs in any Texas Middle School Pep Rally than that!...or even the "Vick'em" logo for that matter!

The only people at fault here is The University of North Dakota. If they would jump on the big 'ole PC bandwagon and change their "mascot" to the Big Green Wave from the Fighting Sioux or something, then noone would have to worry about being offended! That artist was merely dealing with the hand they were dealt.

This all bores me.

Native Americans don't care about the mascot business, they are too busy making money at the casinos.

Texans in general do not care about sissy sensitive wimps. Suck it up. I am not a Texas Tech fan of any sort...but they did nothing wrong at all...good program front!!

Actually, this reminds me of a cartoonist named Dirk West who drew parodies for the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal several years ago. He drew cartoons from the old Southwest Conference, and he was marvelous. Some of his traits included:

1. The Aggie ALWAYS looked dumb!
2. The Baylor Bear always had a tear in his eye.
3. Just aboput anytime the Evil Empire lost a game, one of Bevo's horns would be broken.

Always funny, classic stuff.

Gern

If anyone is interested, here is a link to some of Dirk West's cartoons.

He LOVED poking fun at UT. This cartoon is one about David McWilliams, who left Tech after one year to coach at Texas.

I am Native American and not offended by this at all. However,if we're gonna say quit your whining to the Indians, have some balls and say it also to the blacks and Mexicans.Their known for pulling the race card faster than anyone.Anon 1:34 I'm unsure if your refering to Indians as sissy-sensitive wimps,or some other group, but I can assure you there's nothing sissy or sensitive about this Apache.

" not the right to not be offended by freedom of speech"

Mzchief, I'm offended by your freedom of speech all the time!

I know other people who are offended by smarta**e* who use their "freedom of gestures" too. IN fact, I think if one is so offended by another's use of profanity or use of obscene gestures, they can tell a policeman and something can be done. I had an officer tell me once that if I "file" against someone for their obscene language to me because it offended me, then they can ticket them!

So there!

Since when do they display the chancellor on the football program cover? good grief.

Cool so many remember the great Dirk West and his SWC cartoons!

To anonymous...
Though I do not agree with the law regarding obscene language/gestures, there is a difference between something being obscene and something being insensitive. Obscenity is viewed as being disruptive to society/the peace/societal mores. Insensitivity just hurts some people's feelings.

If you have not noticed, I am sufficiently insensitive enough not to give a rat's hind end whether or not you are offended by me exercising my freedom of speech.

I love being me!

Well, if you're going to make the white people look dumb, then I guess you have to make the Native look dumb too.

This is sort of why I think it's kind of silly to have teams named after Native American tribes. I mean, unless you're paying some kind of royalties on it (which...nobody is.)

PERSONALLY, need to do something to ACTUALLY improve the lives of Native Americans/minorities, other than hiss and spit about what someone else says about Native Americans/minorities.

Some Native Americans actually think you're improving the lives of Native Americans by not misappropriating their images. Just FYI.

Thanks Gern for the link. I was one of those Saddle Tramps mentioned in the article at the airport when those bunch of arrogant longhorns got off that plane and spat on our carpet or walked around it. Akers himself pushed me out of the way to walk around the carpet. And that was the very day I became a permanent longhorn hater. Tech's head coach Rex Dockery (RIP) used that incident as his motivational speach before the game and the team wents nuts. Tech beat those teasips that day 24-20!
