"Birthers"

It's a little long, but the New York Times has an opinion piece on "birthers" - those who refuse to believe that Obama was born in the U.S. That's where I found this video which has been making the rounds over the last couple of days. I call it "Angry Crowd That Could Be In Wise County." (And I learned in the comments to the NYT's piece something that I should have known. Even if the crazies are right and he wasn't born in the U.S., being born to a an American Baby Mama makes him a U.S. citizen any way.)

Here is a link to a copy of the birth certificate. Hawaii became a state of the United States on August 21, 1959. Obama was born August 4, 1961. Two years and 17 days after Hawaii became a state.
(I had already seen the video of this nut.)
Technically, John McCain was not a "natural born" citizen. He was born "in the Panama Canal Zone in 1936". I know that his father was stationed there, but the constitution does say "natural born" citizen and Obama fits that criteria better than McCain did. (http://www.nytimes.com/2008/02/28/us/politics/28mccain.html)

Not true. If born outside the US, the law was at that time: "If only one parent was a U.S. citizen at the time of your birth, that parent must have resided in the United States for at least 10 years, at least five of which had to be after the age of 14." She wasn't old enough to qualify. (Section 301(g) INA)

A US citizen yes but not a natural born US citizen as required by the Constitution.

9:49 is exactly correct, Obama cannot gain citizenship through his mother if he was born outside the U.S. because of the residency/age restriction on her. Also, Obama has traveled internationally without an American passport!! Try an Indonesian passport! Why in the hell does he not want to show an original birth certificate signed by a doctor, not a certificate of live birth?

I think I've got this one figured out.

Being pretty much opposed to most of what the Obama administration is doing, this would be a great little scandal, if it were true. Fact is, it isn't. The President was born in Oahu. People need to get over it and open their eyes.

Here's my take. If you're the President, why wouldn't you let the crazies try and take over the Republican party or at least let them hijack the conversation? I think it's more of a distraction for the Republican party than it is for the President. Might make people in the middle politically less inclined to take a look at the party with these wing nuts.

You "loonies" voted this con man into office. Evidently some of you have waked up to the fact that the man IS NOT ABLE TO DO THE JOB because his "confidence rating" is lower now than even Carter's was after the same amount of time in office. God help America!

These "birther" nutbags are so far out there Hubble can't even focus on them.

Don't they realise if Obama wasn't a natural born citizen that McCain/Palin and the "Swiftboaters" would have been running commercials 24/7 during the election?

Reminds me of those fruitcakes that say the moon landing was faked on a TV soundstage.

The American people are giving President Obama the exact same approval rating that they bestowed on George W. Bush at six months into his presidency - 57% approval, according to this week's Gallup poll. Their confidence is falling (slightly) on the issue of health care reform, where the country remains pretty evenly divided (49% approve, 47% disapprove). Never mind that it's Congress - and not the President - who is proposing the specific plans with which the American public have issues with.

Why is it that people continue to pursue this line of attack involving Obama's birth certificate? It only marginalizes the already thin Republican party, and it does drive Independents from your side. They may not like Democrats, but at least they have a glimmer of intelligence and do not need to be "waked up."

As a liberal Democrat, I sincerely hope that the craziness of the modern Republican party - a party that caters to racists, zealots and the uninformed - continues to whittle away at their small gatherings, forever making the GOP a regional party (unfortunately, it's my region).

God can't help America; he doesn't exist. Why not ask George Bush for help instead? Or Sarah Palin?

10:27 PM: If you're going to claim "confidence rating" as evidence of Obama doing a bad job, you'd best be using the same logic with W's "confidence ratings" near the end of his term!

Hang on because this nut is going to strip of more rights than Barry could have ever bitched about

They were even able to find the news paper birth announcement from 1961. And the crazies say that was fabricated to.

So this conspiracy plan to put a black man into office dates back to the 1960's.

Are we sure these people are not from Wise County?

If there was not a problem, Obama would put an end to all the law suits and questions by coming forward with his birth certificate. His mother was not of legal age (19) at time of his birth in Kenya to make him a natural born citizen, therefore, not able to become the president of the USA.

Or could the problem be who the real father is? Some say it is the communist poet who was his mentor and family friend back when he was a teenager.

9:26, A Certificate of Live Birth is not a birth certificate. The document that you link to has the certificate number blacked out. The form clearly states at the bottom "ANY ATLERATIONS INVALIDATE THIS CERTIFICATE". Therefore this document is invalid. There is no doctor's name on the document. Nor is there a place for a signature. Why would someone file a Certificate of Live Birth if they had a birth certificate on file with the State?? This smells. We need the constitutional requirement of citizenship verified. Obama needs to stop fighting requests from concerned citizens to provide a birth certificate, not a Certificate of Live Birth.

Funny the same people defending Bush are bashing Obama and the same people defending Obama were bashing Bush.

What scares me about most politicians is that they have spent little time in the real world and spend little time talking to real people.

I've spent time in the government run health industry and know the abuses and many problems with the system. I've worked in it and seen it first hand. Our health care system is horrible but I know how much worse it can get if it is administered by the government.

Sounds to me like to little too late. This guy has no experience in anything as far as I could tell. He wasn't in the Senate long enough to have the paint dry on the name on his office door. He doesn't have any qualifications to do much of anything. I would be interested to see if he could pass the bar if locked in a room and supervised while taking it without a prompter. I think his track record so far is telling the whole story. Perhaps George W. still has keys to the back door and is doing all the bad stuff at night while everyone is sleeping. That would explain it. It is going to be his fault at some point anyway. Even this jokes grandma said he was born in Kenya. If he is a natural-born American, prove it and move on. That is not asking to much. John Q. Public has to prove it just to get a passport to get back in this country if you travel abroad. Not that much to ask if he has nothing to hide. Then what? American by marrige possibly?? Is that going to be plan B?

5:52, "They were even able to find the news paper birth announcement from 1961. And the crazies say that was fabricated to." No one says that they were fabricated. I was born in the State of Washington to a Canadian mother living in the United States. An announcement was placed in the Vancouver, B.C. newspapers. So, does that prove I was born in Canada? It is not unusual to place an announcement in the newspapers in the city where grandparents reside.

We just want to see his birth certificate, not a Certificate of Live Birth. This smells.

His policies are terrible and are going to cost us a fortune. Where he was born does not change that. Congress has more to do with the policies than he does but he is out in full force to support this nightmare of a health care bill (and cap and trade which=higher cost of living to the citizens and does little if anything for the environment). UGH!!!

7:10, 7:23, 8:39 Listen to yourselves. You are making no sense. Read the Snopes articles or any others written by people who have actually examined the facts and documents involved. There have been at least 2 lawsuits filed in Federal Court regarding this issue and both have been summarily dismissed.

You ask why won't he release the "real" birth certificate? Really? He provided the copy from the State of Hawaii, that should be enough. When I have needed one in the past I picked up a certified copy of mine from the County Clerk (who can give you a certified copy of yours too if you were born anywhere in Texas). That certified copy is valid for any and all purposes. It is legally authoritative. Period.

So, what you want is for him to dignify the crazy claims of people that hate (or at least, strongly disagree with) him. He's already provided the proof necessary for any legal proceeding. Yet, you still won't believe it. Why in the world would a person that won't believe the proof in front of their face believe the next copy?

The other things is this. As long as the Birthers have control of the Republican party, the Republican party will appear to those in the middle as a bunch of right-wing nut-jobs. So, why would Obama do anything that silences that faction? The louder they scream, the crazier the Republicans sound.

According to the military newsletter that I receive, someone has contested Obama's legitimacy as Commander in Chief:

http://www.military.com/news/article/anti-obama-gis-afghan-orders-revoked.html?ESRC=navy-a.nl

Everyone can draw their own conclusions from this...but it appears that this attorney has more clients waiting in the wings to do the same. I thought military service was about serving our country, not who was president.

M-M said...

The military revoked a soldiers assignment to go to Afghanistan just last week after filing a lawsuit that the president is not the commander in chief because of this birth certificate issue. Why would the military do that if the allegation is baseless? The mystery continues.

wordkyle said...

Even if the birth certificate thing were true, does anyone believe that Obama would be removed from office? Please. They want to take over a massive portion of the economy...do you think a birth certificate is an issue for them?

I believe a previous poster hit close to the target. If, IF there is a coverup about his birth, it likely has more to do with the identity of his father than his citizenship.

Anonymous said...

And actually John McCain was born in the canal zone to American Parents with his father stationed there by the military which makes him a natural born citizen.

I don't know why there seems to be a difference between a Certificate of Live Birth and a Certified Birth Certificate....anyone know?

I agree that if it were proven that he was born in Kenya as the Kenyans allege, it wouldn't matter because laws don't really apply to liberal democrats

Anonymous said...

Why is this an issue....republicans need to realize that if they were to successfully prove that Obama was not born in the US then that makes Joe Biden president. There won't be a do-over election. So either way, a dem is still in office.

Anonymous said...

9:13, you do not get the point and are dissimulating false information. At no time has Obama provide his birth certificate. He has provided a Certificate of Live Birth, not a BIRTH CERTIFICATE. Look at your own birth certificate. It has the name of the doctor who attended your mother. It has many details. None of this information is on the document that you are erroneously calling Obama's birth certificate. If Obama was born in Hawaii there is a BIRTH CERTIFICATE, signed by the doctor, on file in Hawaii. Let us see it or we will not stop filing lawsuits asking for it.

Anonymous said...

"Birthers have control of the Republican party"
Really? Is that your take on it? The average conservative has let that issue go. Besides, if it can be proven, as another commenter said, that just makes old "foot in mouth" Joe the Prez. whoopee

soz said...

217, my birth certificate doesn't have a doctor's sig on it (i think). i KNOW it doesn't have the doc who delivered me sig anywhere on it. it's a state document, with the seal, my parents names, county of birth and that's about it (along with the date). i think you may be confused, have your terminology confused, or the terminology differs from state to state...

Anonymous said...

2:17....you need an idiot certificate. "Birth certificate" and "certificate of live birth" are the same damn thing.....different states call them different names.

How do I know this? Oh, I don't know, maybe it's because I'm a DOCTOR and I've signed a few thousand of them.

Anonymous said...

Gee, Are these "birthers" actually claiming that Obama's mother had the terrific foresight to fudge his birth in Hawaii rather than some other foreign country so that he could become president. Conspiracy theorists are a strange group. But then, we have a bunch of these goofies in Wise Co.

I wonder if those people will be put on a terrorist watch list, since most of them were probably republicans and they stood and recited the Pledge of Allegiance.

Let the Pug Nuts worry about this. If the issue was cleared up, they would jump on something else, so it makes sense to let them, the rwing crazies, keep hammering on something that does not make a sheet. Ha Ha. I would bet that in preparation to having a person nominated to running for President of the United States, little issues of being of being legal would probably be checked out. But conservative dicks sure can keep working on it. Keeps'em occupied. Hey, there may be something to this. Investigate! Now!

2:54, several Hawaii Certificates of Live Birth are posted on the Internet. Those issued at the time of Obama's birth have the doctor's signature and much more other information not found on the fake Obama certificate. This fake is mentioned in several of the lawsuits that have been filed. Idiots who use modern technology to produce documents that were alleged to be printed 50 years ago are stupid to think that no one can catch them by evaluating the print type and paper.

To the "doctor" who claims to have signed thousands of birth certificates I ask this question: Why is the one from Obama not signed and why does it not have a block for a signature? Are there situations where a signed certificate is not filed with the State?

Anonymous said...

To nutcase 4:15.....fine, you seem to have the superior knowledge. So, I guess that makes Joe Biden president. Happy now????

The birth certificate that is going around is the one thas is filed for a birth that did not occur with a doctor present. It can be mailed in to the clerks office. If the birth was in Hawaii at a hospital then the typical one with more detail would have been filed.
