Wow

I just visited with an elementary teacher from the Dallas ISD where she estimated that 90% of the students in her particular school were Hispanic. I asked her about language issues that she faced and was shocked to learn this: There are signs in the common areas of her school that proclaim Monday, Wednesday, and Friday as "Spanish Days" and Tuesday and Thursday and "English Days." That means that all students and teachers (when not in class - i.e. in the hallways or at lunch) should speak that designated language.

Yes, it's an effort to get the Hispanic kids to start using English, since more and more those kids aren't required to by their parents or others in order to get by in an increasingly Hispanic part of Texas. I think the DISD is doing its best to deal with the situation it has been saddled with. Kudos on this idea.

Absurd...We are an English-speaking nation. I'd yank my kid out and homeschool before she is ever subjected to that BS.

THE GREAT PARADOX:

RANT: Although I am such a liberal, I find this totally unacceptable. If anyone comes to live in the US, whether legally or illegally, they need to speak the language. Shiate, the whole world, in most cases, speaks English in one shape, form or fashion, except for the little ones. I say put these kiddos in language classes before they can even begin to take other courses.....that would surely raise our TAKS test scores.

REALITY: They don't speak English. I know several customers of mine run large factories, offering over-minimum wage jobs with horrible working conditions that hire non-English speaking people to do their factory work - the Hispanics stay with it and do the job right the first time - the lazy Americans tend to work a few days, mess up a great quantity of parts, then either quit or hurt themselves and attempt to go on disability.

To the best of my knowledge, the Hispanics all have green cards at the places I support, but the companies still have to have spanish speaking HR to hire them in the first place, and spanish speaking support personnel who then direct them in their job duties afterwards.

PERSONAL REALITY CHECK: I really do need to learn Spanish - but which Spanish - formal or colloquial? I've had some translations done for instructional work, by an Anglo-Saxon Protestant who translated in formal, and the workers couldn't understand a flipping thing.

---OR----
I think that it is great that they are trying to teach students to learn English, but I believe they are going about it in the wrong way. Students need stricter rules and be pressure more to learn English, otherwise, they will never succeed in the United States.

Once these children go on to further their education, like we should all hope, they will not be given the opportunity, to raise their hand and ask the professor to give the lecture in Spanish.

IGNORANCE is all I see on this page! IGNORANCE! for crying out loud you guys make it seem like speaking spanish is a deadly desease. Don't be so narrowminded or scared for that matter. i guess that's why u reside in WISE COUNTY. This is DALLAS they are with the times-- it's a smart thing to do with students! In other countries it's the norm to know more than one language. It's something that will benefit these kids when they get older! Why the hostility?! geeeez. grow up all of u! GET EDUCATED read the facts and statistics--- THIS IS A GOOD thing if u even cared. It's 2007!!

Oh, Wise County you are such a small-minded community. Bless your heart. Why do you feel so threatened by students speaking more than one language?

Sometimes I hate Wise County and times like these I love it. You can always count on wise Countians to rally 'round the courthouse when it comes to defending the good ol' US of A and defending our God-given right to speak Amer'kin.

Remember the last words of William B. Travis: "Where the hell did all these DISD students come from?"

Wow. I think that they have a good idea. However they should be speaking English more often than Spanish. To know more than one language this day in age gives you a better chance to be hired in many jobs. It also allows you to understand those who do not speak English. Spanish speaking people are here and they are not going away. Even if we were able (which were not) to make everyone here illegally leave we would still have those that are leagal here and most of them would still speake Spanish because that is their first language.

Everyone living here should learn to speak English but that doesnt mean that we should not learn Spanish or another langauge to better ourselves.

So many comments are COMPLETELY inverted on what is going on with this issue. It is NOT an effort to convert to Spanish...it is totally an effort by the DISD to make these kids SPEAK ENGLISH. Hey, you start with two days, maybe they get better and better at it....

I THINK WE SHOULD ALL OWN AT LEAST THREE, really,

Wow...I am disgusted that people in Wise County are so insensitive. These people come here to support our economy and help us. They don't yet know the language because they were not exposed to it before they came here. Plus, english is a very hard language to learn. I have taught ESL kids, and even though they are as smart or smarter than their english-speaking classmates, they struggle with reading levels. If anything, we should reach out to them and help them assimilate rather than cutting them down and degrading them. Maybe we are just afraid they will take our jobs if we educate them.

As to DISD, the idea is good, but it needs to be flip-flopped, so they are exposed to english more days than not. Also, this is a great idea because the ten percent who are Hispanic can learn on these days. This would have helped me to know some spanish before I got to high school. We need to educate our english-speaking children too, so that when they go to another country, they will not be looked down upon as you look down upon Hispanics. But is there another country in the world full of as many bigots as the "great" US of A?

We need to stop thinking we are the greatest country in the world. We have the potential to be. But until we learn to work together BECAUSE of our differences and learn from other people, we will continue to be passed up by China and India.

I was shocked to read that the teacher estimated that 90@ of students in her particual school were hispanic. As easy as it is for me to say, speak english or get out. The truth is that we don't have a choice. The demographics of race and ethnicity in Texas are changing at a rapid pace. Our children need to be bilingual. Why not introduce them to diffrent languages at a young age?

4:15, look at 11:47's comment. It's to make the Mexicans learn English. They don't speak 2 languages, yet. Many of the wetbacks here don't speak 2 languages, just Spanish. I bet this same school wastes our tax dollars by teaching classes in both languages, too. My husband says they come in his shop all the time, try to tell them which car part they need in Spanish, and get mad because he can't understand them. That's insane. Learn our language. Speak Spanish at home or among your peers, but speak English when doing business here in the USA.

If I move to Mexico, will schools and businesses have to learn English to accomodate me????????

I'm always torn when this subject comes up. I wholeheartedly agree that if you are going to live here, you need to speak our language, plain and simple. It also infuriates me that kids have to have 2 years of a foreign language to graduate from our high schools...this is totally insane. With all that being said, here are my random observations: (1) some of my dearest friends are hispanic, some things we agree on, some things we don't. (2) my husband's business is a staffing firm in Dallas, and just about the only people that will work for 8 - 10 dollars an hour are hispanic, white folks think that money is beneath them (3) my daughter is a school teacher and says that the most intelligent and well behaved kids are hispanic kids for the most part; just a few observations...I know changes need to be made to make sure that when they live here, they should speak our language, but I'm not so sure anyone has an answer that we can all live with.

Hispanics aren't forcing anyone 2 learn a new language. THey aren't forcing us 2 CHANGE the dominant language from English 2 Spanish. They are dominating in size/population and sooner or later English may possibly be the minority language -- [& there is nothing u can do about that] (@ least in TEXAS!) i mean we are the closest 2 the border. -- so what does it hurt 2 teach it or to acquire it and get a head start?
