Normally the top bands that make 1 ratings(which is the top score) advance to the area competition, but only every other year. This particular year is not an advancing year so this competition that just happened this weekend is the only one for this year. Next year will be an area advancing year.
Yes to 10:47--just another example of our "free press" media not able to get their facts straight. I'm sure they'll still win some awards, though, at some "you pat my back and I'll pat your back" awards event. Still awaiting to see a "Most Accurate" award during those events. Not holding my breath.
Advancing year or non-advancing year. What balderdash! The kids participating are doing their best and deserve recognition (or non-recognition) for their efforts. When "everybody" wins is the norm, it takes the satisfaction of real competition out of it. The kids know the difference. So why do we give "high" awards to everyone when all the participants know the difference between the good and not so good bands? (Similar to the silliness 2-3 football teams making the playoffs!)
No, you don't advance by just showing up. I was a volunteer worker at the event on Saturday. The bands that received 1's deserved them. Unfortunately, not every band received a 1, ask Chico HS and Denton HS.
10:47 is on the mark. A high school band is only eligible every other year.
when i was in school (20+) yrs ago the band was awsum. they marched with military precision and actually played while marching. now they seem to just walk out there, stand and play a song or two that you can barely make out what it is. the flag girls odviosly dont work very hard or the would have to buy 4x skirts, and sometime they dont even wear the school colors.
while im ranting at poor quality, how bout the cheerleaders, they just stand aroud and clap, or leap every now and then. seldom do a cheer, the football player have to tell them when they score so they'll know to throw stuff to the crowd, its almost funny to watch. they have know clue what theyre there for.
but on the good side, the football quality has gone way up. we used to run 32 dive for 3 down and punt over and over, now they play with college skill. it awsome to watch, so i guess its worth 5 buck to get in.

Momma says people can't get as worked up over arts programs as they do about fooseball.
Who in these "competitions" doesn't advance? Do you advance by just showing up?
Springtown ISD covers parts of southern Wise - and we got in too! Must be the water!
I was an all-american banjo player in the 60's .

Just goes to show there is more than football in our schools.

10:47 and 9:10, this is not an "advancing year" for Class 3A. This IS, however, an "advancing year" for Class 2A.
People generally don't appreciate how hard bank kids work.

I was there, too. Are you seriously going to tell me that the Gainesville band deserved a "1"?
