I think that they have not open the gates much in the past 2 yaers but prior to that TRWD has opened the gates as need to manage the level of eagle mountain lake et al.
11:51... Typically they open the valve, not the gates to release water to manage Eagle Mtn. Spillway gates have been a little rarer.
What is even cooler was I remember back in the day going down into the spillway after the water is shut off and scooping up fish out of the pools. And Gamey not being very happy about it!

It is not that rare.
The time the 380 bridge was submerged, the water was ROARING into the spillway at near the level of the top of the channel!
