Hey, Barry, you're running off another potential client.

Back away from the video.

It looks like a couple of people will need an attorney; us taxpayers will probably get to pick up the bill.

John Mccay said that over 250,000 dogs are now safe because of the arrest in Decatur.

Anonymous said...

I had to listen to that part twice.
Wow 250 thousand dogs. That's alot of K-9's and just might be a record.

Anonymous said...

I thought that's what he said, too, but I thought it was just me.

Hey Barry, now we can add these to the list of 150:

#17- Best place to lose your life savings.

#18- Best place to adopt one of 250,000 abused dogs.

Darn it, now we're stuck on #19!!

Sounds like the dogs had it pretty good- the lady and her husband moved out of the house and into a travel trailer so the barking dogs could have the house and not disturb the neighbors. Sure she might be a little "dog crazy" but sounds like she might take better care of them than herself.

And, don't let those panting dogs convince you they're dying of thirst. My spoiled dog does that after one lap around the block.

Anonymous said...

Hoarding, plain and simple. The fact that she mainly collected only two types of dog shows that she is unfit for her job.

The Lady who stole the life savings of another needs to be put in one of those "Dog Kennels" and I am positive Jana Jones is going to find her that Jail cell ...

Now the lady who has taken in the Dogs ... Have we forgotten that the Wise County Commissioners have had NO ACTION with the county pound. It looks like her home was a better place than the county could provide. So she saved them from certain death ... It is very heart breaking to see "Mans Best Friend" treated this way.

I have two "County Drop Offs" of my own and I wouldnt trade them for the world :)

Best place to see the largest assortment of pink foam curlers in the country. Decatur Walmart - good times!

Anonymous said...

It's a set up to gain support for the new animal shelter. Goes like this: "Berend, you take these dogs and house them in filthy conditions. We'll send SPCA to catch you. You say you couldn't take them to the pound because it was so pitifully bad, and we'll then make sure you're not charged." Sounds like a good plan for getting the new shelter supported to me.

Anonymous said...

I think it is pathetic that commissioners WILL NOT find the funds for a new animal shelter! They should all be kicked out of office.
I know some cities have had people DONATE money to build shelters. Maybe some of the nice people with lots of money could step forward to help out. It is just ridiculous that Wise County has no real animal control facility that will attract people's attention and bring them in to adopt these poor animals. Way to many are being put to sleep. Awful and irresponsible!! Vote out the commissioners!

Anonymous said...

Shame on that old lady's family for not taking better care of her and for not "having a clue" about all this. Over two years, you can get an idea that something isn't right. I sure would.

TXsharon said...

10:05 Her family is quite involved. She is, after all, an adult and it is difficult or impossible to force a functioning adult to let a child audit their finances.

Now I know why I never find any animals from Wise County shelters (excluding private rescue operations) on Petfinder. This nutcase was hoarding them all!

Bowie's animal shelter is a good example on how things should be done. Numerous listings on Petfinder, easy to contact and very nice facility.

But Bowie (and Montague County) is smaller so everything is inferior, right?

Anonymous said...

I think some of you need to grow up. Leave the name calling to grade schoolers. Keep the focus on whats important here, which is the animals. I know for a fact that she loves and cares for the animals but it is obvious that she took on to much responsibility. She just couldn't say no to taking in other peoples throw away pets. What began as helping the animals she loved became a heartache for her she will never forget.

trappedinchico said...

1036: "She just couldn't say no to taking in other peoples throw away pets."

Then why were there mainly only two breeds of dog? If animal altruism was her motivation, why not save them all?

Or does Wise County have a disproportionately large population of Jack Russell Terriers? Must be something in the water...

Anonymous said...

Were you there do you know what kind of dogs they all were? You can read what ever you like in to the news stories. There out for ratings. She did race Jack Russells that is why she had them. Which she has had for many years. They breed over time and her love of them got the best of her to where she would'nt sale or find other homes for them.

Anonymous said...

Sherri jo is a good woman with a big heart that just had too much on her plate. She wanted to save the world so to speak. She loved dogs and would take any dog that needed a home in. Its sad to know that people look at the negative in people that are trying to do a good deed. She just didn't need that many dogs, it was too much. She didn't mistreat any of them. So people unless you know the entire situation keep you rude comments to yourself. and quit judging!

trappedinchico said...

I've seen the pictures, and no not the ones in the news stories.

They breed over time? It just gets deeper and deeper. Not only was she hoarding, but they're weren't fixed. I imagine you can look at it as keeping herself in work.

There is something seriously wrong with an animal control officer who won't even spay or neuter their own animals. There are too many unwanted animals as it is, and she was wantonly adding to that population. She of all people should know that.

And then to top it off, she raced Jack Russells. Yet another morally repugnant deed. Hey, she loved them though! But make sure momma gets some bacon from the next race!

There is a line that is crossed and the excuse that "love" or "saving them" becomes a mental illness. Or greed.

Anonymous said...

i love my comments, how dare you say they are rude! you don't know me so quit judging!

Anonymous said...

trappedinchico I did'nt think that I could be suprised in this society of ours. But damn if I was wrong. I have never seen so much ignorance about a subject, person or animal in my life. You are commenting obviously on something you know nothing about. Your ignorance and determination to make something worse out of situations is evident in your response. No one said she got money for racing the dogs. You say you saw the photos what did you see, because I saw healthy dogs. Way to go and be part of a problem rather than a solution.

Anonymous said...

hoarding? good God you act like they were a commodity.

Anonymous said...

11:11 judge and be judged. When you point your finger remember you have a few pointing back at yourself.

Anonymous said...

Just to set the record straight for those of you who think you know the facts, but don't - Sherry Jo is the ACO for the City of Decatur. The city and county have different animal shelters so she has nothing to do with trying to get the county a new shelter. Also, she has raised dogs for many years. She has only been employeed by the city since last fall so her job as ACO had nothing to do with her acquiring all those dogs. All the pictures on the tv showed perfectly healthy and happy pups. I know for certain that she does a good job as the city ACO.

Anonymous said...

and to 11:11 I don't know you your right and I am not judging you I am just saying what is rude is rude! Period and its good that you love your comments but some things are best left unsaid such as the things you don't know that much about!

Anonymous said...

and to 11:18 AMEN!

Anonymous said...

Im confused....

The dogs were living in overcrowded, filthy conditions. They were running loose in a house in which every accessable surfice was covered in feces, urine, and hair. There were more dogs than two people could really take care of on their own.

Exactly how was it OK? She took good care of them how? What from the pictures you saw was healthy? The pictures I saw told a different story.

Anonymous said...

I did'nt read one comment that said it was okay she had so many. Maybe you should skim back over the posts again.
The truth is that she really loves those dogs, and she is truly a good person. You can try to twist that fact all you want but you will never acomplish it.

Anonymous said...

Every dog I saw in the photos looked very healthy, and I have seen her with some of her dogs they were always perfectly healthy.

Anonymous said...

My concern is this; if she's breeding the dogs and they're running around together in one closed in area then how is she controling the "in" breeding" that is more than likely taking place... I myself wouldn't like to pay money for a pure bred dog and have it crossed with a close relative... Know what I mean??

Anonymous said...

umm.. i give up

trappedinchico said...

Here is a news flash for all the people saying we shouldn't talk about her/this issue:

If you don't want to draw attention to yourself, don't do stupid things. Or if you do get caught, just say you love whatever it is you were abusing. That makes it all okay.

I resent that it is said I look at the negative. I disagree. I only see the positive, the positively insane.

Anonymous said...

Trappedinchico - perhaps you should get out of Chico and see the real world every once in a while. Yes, she had way too many dogs. Yes, they may have been a little crowded but for crying out loud - when you have 200 plus dogs there is going to be some dog shoo-shoo lying around. I got a dog from this woman several years ago. She has healthy dogs. I think the pics looked pretty darned good for having 200 dogs. I definitely think she nees to downsize but I do not think that she abused any of her animals in any way. It is amazing to me that people make such a big deal about a lady having too many dogs and no one is concerned about all the families in the county with six kids in a one bedroom apartment living on foodstamps. I just don't get it.

Anonymous said...

She didnt abuse them in ANY way? Uh, she not insane, you are.

Anonymous said...

Actually I think I am pretty normal. Did you see one out of the 271 dogs that looked like it was suffering, starving to death, or diseased ---- ummm NO. I agree they were crowded but nothing that I saw was bad enough to destroy the woman's life or ruin her reputation. Call me insane if you choose but I don't stoop to name calling. I am a grown woman and I act like it.

Anonymous said...

No one here has said she intentionally abused these dogs. What she has done is an act of omission....she has taken on more dogs that she can care for WELL. Yes, they may have been fed, and maybe they appeared to be in good condition. There obviously was something wrong though, or else the Authorities and the SPCA would not be involved.

greta said...

OMG!

250,000 dogs!

Anonymous said...

HOW ABOUT EVERYONE GET A LIFE AND QUIT POINTING FINGERS AT THE WOMAN. IM SURE EACH ONE OF YOU HAVE MANY FAULTS! SO GET BACK TO WORK OR WHATEVER YALL DO AND MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS!!! GOSSIP IS ALL WISE COUNTY IS ABOUT! GET A LIFE PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!

Collectionsite said...

Anonymos @ 3:54pm is correct ...

Now lets talk about Anon ... (or do you want to wait until they log off?)

greta said...

Yes, I have lots of faults, afterall, no one is perfect.

But....

250,000 dogs for personal liesure! I would like to know how much that food bill was on a daily basis. I can't imagine a Wise County Dog Catcher making enough to cover the cost. Not to mention the vet bills that must accumulate on 250,000 dogs.

Darn, I will probally dream about dogs all night!!!!!

Anonymous said...

4:06 do you not get it there were only 271 dogs the 250,000 was a mistake by the news caster

Anonymous said...

4:06 she does not work for Wise County.

greta said...

Yes, I got it after I just read the Update

Good, maybe I won't have doggie dreams tonight

greta said...

Yea, and let's publish that a warrant will be issued next week for the spanish lady who stole from that elderly lady.

I see an escape to Mexico possibly in the near future.

Anonymous said...

If she is smart, she would run to Canada.

Anonymous said...

The interview Tuesday morning with Berend said that several dogs were dead and she said herself that they were dead a few days.

Yep....she was taking really good care of them.

Anonymous said...

We already know that she's not smart or she woould not have done this in the first place.

Anonymous said...

True, 6:42! It was not a very smart thing to do in the first place!

Anonymous said...

6:42 where were all the pics of these dead dogs? I sure didn't see them!

and your point is? said...

Look people, she took care of ALOT of dogs. The ones that I saw on the TV looked pretty healthy to me. When you have that many animals you should expect to have some deaths!!
My God, if she hadn't taken them, where would they have gone????
She even gave up her brick home and moved into a travel trailer and let them have her home!!!
I don't call that ABUSE!

Hell, we can't get Wise County to prosecute child abusers. It surprises me when they prosecute animal abusers!!

Anonymous said...

7:47...like they would really show the pictures of the dead dogs on TV....get your head out of your ass and wake up. Not everything you see on TV is the whole story. I am referring to a video clip of Berend speaking to Chanel 8 this morning in front of animal control....go see it for yourself on their website if you want to be convinced.

Anonymous said...

10:20 you need to grow up. Thanks for making my point in your post. "Not everything you see on tv is the whole story." I wouldn't put so much emphasis on overdramatic reporting either. Now, who's head is where???

Anonymous said...

I know you are feeling sheepish right now....maybe you should bow out now while you can.

Anonymous said...

I am not feeling sheepish. I stand up for what I believe in. I don't think she is a bad person or that her reputation should be ruined. Those that know her understand this.

Anonymous said...

and you must know her so well.

Anonymous said...

I am not saying that I know her well, but simply that I know her. My point is that many sex offenders and murders do not get this kind of negative publicity. This is a very unfortunate situation for all involved and trashing her name is not going to do anything but bring more heartache to her and her family. Regardless of anyone's opinion, the judge will make the decision that will be in the best interest of all those involved.

Anonymous said...

All of you commenting about the Berend case need to realize that the point is not that she is a bad person it's just that those dogs were cruelly treated. For any of you to say they weren't just don't know the real sitaution. And as for her giving up her house she couldn't live in it anymore because of all the filth, fecies, rats, and dead dogs inside the house. So if ya'll want to call that generous then whatever. She has a mental problem like most hoarders do. She and her husband need to be punished for knowingly harming their dogs. That kind of confinement has serious long term effects on the dogs. I just wanted to make clear that she's the City of Decatur Animal Control and should loose her job becuase if she can't take care of her own dogs then how can she take care of the shelter dogs. This has nothing to do with the Wise County Animal Shelter wanting a new shelter because everyone knows that they need one. The people working there do the best they can but they can't do anymore with what they have to work with. The fact of the matter is that Sherri Jo and her husband mistreated their animals reguradless of what kind of people they are.

Anonymous said...

thank you anon 1:38! That is exactly what I was trying to say....about 3 times. Every time I tried to say this, the people in denial jumped all over me. The dogs may have been fed, but I can lock my kid in a room and throw in a pork chop every once in a while too. That would not be right would it? Neither would doing what she did to those dogs.

Anonymous said...

For crying out loud, leave it up to the justice system to sort out the facts. I have never seen a story bring so many want to be pyschiatrists to share their analysis of Sherri Jo and her mental health.

Anonymous said...

The fact is you don't know how the dogs were treated, you don't know when she fed them, or when she watered them. Your just jumping on a wagon and hauling ass just to be doing so.

Anonymous said...

It's clearly evident from all the numerous photos how the animals were treated. You don't treat something you care about like that. I'm not trying to be a
psychiatrist I'm just saying she needs help because she's a typical hoarder. When people are hoarders they can't stop themselves. If she cared so much about dogs then why did she mostly have Jack Russel Terriers? That is not just caring about animals that's being compulsive!
