Cinco De Mayo

It was about 20 years ago when I didn't know a single word of spanish - I turned to my co-workers at lunch and asked "When is cinco de mayo?" I was met by stares that haunt me to this day.

This is a celebration that marks the time when the French came to collect money that a State in Mexico had borrowed. The Mexican state did not want to pay their debt, so they fought and defeated the French contingent. Nice...great thing to celebrate as a national holiday..."we did not pay our debt"!!!!

Yeah but being in disagreement over taxes is not the same as borrowing money, agreeing to pay it back, and then shooting and killing the people that loaned it to you when they ask for you to repay. Viva la Mexico.
