Be Afraid. Be Very Afraid

Attorney General Alberto Gonzales tried to persuade a Congressional committee today that the President listening to our telephone conversations without a warrant is OK. I think his argument was: "Trust us. We know what's good for you. And questioning us is really anti-American."

Executive power is winning! What happened to balance of power between Congress, the President and the Supreme Court?

Big Brother is listening, watching and anyone can be snatched up and sent off with the right to an attorney!

Just throw the consititution out the door with this bunch! Fear rules!

You know, I really don't care if they listen to my conversations. They'd probably fall asleep listening. My question for anyone is what do you have to hide? I agree with what BG posted once about fearing the ? % of people who oppose this. What do they have to hide?

What do you have to fear? Are they listening to the calls of average citizens or to people they have reason to believe could be involved in terrorist activity?

If they listened to my phone call with my mother last night, they caught up with all the gossip from my hometown. It bored me but I'm sure the listeners got a kick out of it.

Q: If they are so worried about it (Congress), why have they not demanded that he stop NOW!

A: They get more camera time, and feel safer if it continues.

If they are only listening to "know terrorists", why don't they just pick them up?

I still don't understand their stubbornness in not obtaining the warrants. If this spying is so legitimate, then just obtain the darn warrants and do it by the book and get rid of the controversy and waste of time for these hearings.

Is it true Gonzalas was not under oath? What was he lying about?

And what if your conversations recently included "going to Dallas to watch them blow up that building"? When they knock on your door I hope you have an explanation so you are not catagorized as an "enemy combatant".

Come on people get a life! Have you seen the news? People are being killed over a carton!!!!

There coming the only question is will we be ready? Lets stop all this nonsense and protect our country!

As is so common, you missed the point of his argument.

Our country can be protected and the spying can be done to protect it just as well, by doing it according to the Constitution and getting warrants. I don't have a problem with them doing the spying to protect us, just get the warrants first. What's so hard about that?

Responses in general: Yes, the Attorney General was NOT sworn in at the discretion of the committee chairman (Republican). NSA has been listening in on all sorts of transmissions for years. The current problem is over listening in on conversations with one end in the USA. But the way calls are currently routed; this can include most all calls. One problem I see is that we don't have enough people to properly translate many foreign language calls. So we might record an important terrorist call but not get around to translating it for months. Great help.

Please recall Ole Ben Franklin (a founding father) who said, "Those who would sacrifice liberty for security deserves neither."

The president must also follow the law AND the spirit of the law.

Yep, Good Ole Ben Franklin always preached against unlawful wire tapping and such. Time and technology definitely affect that argument, 7:54. And, maybe obtaining warrants for each and every conversation they want to listen to would take too long; the conversation would be over. I know that's a bit dramatic, but there are reasons they're debating this issue. Besides, those so vehemently protesting are the same ones that will be crying, "Why didn't Bush, Congress, FBI, CIA or whoever else DO something BEFORE America was attacked?
